Seeking opiniouns concerning this crazy noise. First background info.
Engine has ~30,000 miles on a total rebuild. At idle I have a rythmatic "squeak, squeak, squeak" coming from the drivers side exhaust. First I thought maybe a baffle in the muffler had broke and was rubbing. I cut the exhaust pipe in front of the muffler to test this but still have the noise. I ensured that nothing is rubbing on the frame or other.
The noise started shortly after the rebuild. I ignored it thinking the exhaust/Hedder was "rubbing" on something then one day I had the truck at a shop getting a new speedo cable built/installed and the tech there referred to the sound and said I had "tight valves". Huh??? Never heard the term.
I ran a compression test and all the numbers are good.
I have no fowled plugs or smoke from exhuast.
Engine runs just fine.
What, .... in the cylinder head could cause this noise?
Can you only hear it in the exhaust? And only at idle?
I doubt it's tight valves, those would have broke in by 30,000 miles.
Sam
Yes, ... only hear it out the exhaust pipe. Can hear it off idle as well ... just harder to as the "cherry bombs" are kinda loud once the RPM's come up.
yes and no.... It's hard to tell. The noise does speed up with RPM but I can't tell if the speed matches RPM change or is just an increased viberation generated sound.
Have you checked the exhaust tubes/pipe clearances and nut/bolt tightness from the head to tailpipe? I'm presupposing you have dual exhaust, yes?
Yes, checked them all.
My main concern is that something in the head could be causing the noise.
I am thinking about going to the salvage yard and picking up a pair of ole valve covers so that I can cut the tops off. This way I could temporarily install one on the head with the noise so I can crank it up and observe the valves while containing the oil.
Well, my thought with checking clearances was that if the exhaust system is 'solid' all the way down (no "flex" pipe to counter the torque), something might have been rubbing against something else.....as others here have suggested.
Another thought - motor mounts? Cab to frame mounts?
I have the same hedman headers and had the same squeek, or chirping noise, did it for a year or so, my mileage dropped off so I pulled the intake and did the gaskets , and adjusted the timing , It whent away for 20k or so. Then returned I tried the same fix again but to no avail...
