I have a 2013 FX4 with the smoked out head lights and tail lights from the factory (no chrome). The brake light assembly has a quarter inch trim around it that is clear palstic with kind of a prismatic bevel on the back side. I assume to be reflective. To me it just looks to "bright" next to the dark paint and dark tail light.
Has anybody done anything to black out or tone down the clear exterior outer ring?
no i believe you can get to the outter edge without any issue after you pull the taillight, if your talking about a different part then i'm totally off base.
I used VHT Nite Shades on mine. Although you can't tell from the pic... I taped off the brake light area and went with fewer coats than I did on the cargo light portion. I lost some brightness on the cargo light (which I wasn't concerned about) but my brake light still is as bright as stock.
I've seen Nite Shades look a little dull looking over time. So after the Nite Shades I clear coated it and wet sanded and buffed it as well. Of course I also removed the brake light before the whole process. I hate overspray on my paint.
Not really, I think I used Duplicolor spray can clear.
I'm not usually a big fan of spray can clear. Normally I use 2 part clear coat and my spray gun. But I figured spray can clear would be good enough for this project. It's held up well for about 2.5 years so far.
