O.K. Fella's this is going to be long so just hang with me.
Have had a fuel leak for 2-3 months now. I believe it is the fuel pump. The truck ran perfect until I ran it out of fuel the other day on accident. Got it started and it ran like crap. Changed the oil, replaced air filter, and restriction sensor which was leaking. Cleaned FPR screen, and fuel filter. Cranked it up and it ran much better however still not 100%. Thought maybe it was just air in the system. Let it run in the driveway for 3 hours. Took out and it ran but still not 100%. After a few miles it stalled as if it were out of fuel, and could not get it started again. Let it cool all the way down and it starts just like the 3 hour idle in the driveway. Take it out to drive again and it does the same thing. A few miles down the road and it runs out of fuel and I cant get it started until I let it cool down. WHAT COULD IT BE???? I know I need a fuel pump but why is it acting this way??????
I do not think it is running out of fuel as the fuel bowl remains full. It feels like it is running out of fuel. Where are the IPR o-rings located? Is that an easy fix? Why does this only happen after it ran out of fuel between tanks? It was running perfect before that happened. Do they suck air in? Thanks for the help....
The ipr orings have nothing to do with the fuel, if that is it it's probably just a combination of being a coincidence and bad luck. Here is a picture or two of the ipr. It's on the backside of the hpop. Some are able to get at it without removing the fuel bowl, I never bothered trying. The only way to check them is to pull it out. There's a couple orings there, you can get them at riffraff or your local ford dealer may have them.
It just seems weird that sitting in the driveway I can get over 3000rpms with a low idle miss for 3 hours. Take it out to drive it and 2 miles down the road it slowly loses RPMS until it dies. Damn near have to burn the starter up before it will slowly start. Than it wont go over 1500 rpms. i have to wait until it completely cools for a few hours and the cycle happens again. It is almost like it draws in air under a load. Still learning just throwing stuff out there. Could a weak fuel pump act like this?
I guess I'm not sure, but you know it's leaking, so I'd get it changed. It is a 2 stage pump, so maybe the second stage is crapped out. While I had the bowl out I'd still throw a set of ipr orings on. If the little blue hoses haven't been changed, you better get some new ones there too. You can use fuel injection hose, but buying the blue hose is better. Also can be bought at riffraff or maybe ford.

Ford does have the blue hoses in a kit and they are pre-cut to length.
I will definitely change the pump this week. Why is the pump from Riff Raff $100.00 and the one from ford $500.00. I know the dealerships are a rip off but for goodness sake, is Riff Raff's a quality pump?
From what I've read they are all the same carter (?) pump. I sure don't see the ford one being worth 500! You can do a DIY cheap electric fuel system for that! I wouldn't hesitate at all to buy the one from riffraff.
Edit: If you change the ipr orings, it's quite easy. Just unplug the wiring, take the tin nut off and pull the solenoid off. Then its a deep 1 1/8 socket to remove it. Don't overtighten the tin nut on install. I used loctite on mine last time.
Ok thanks. Riff Raff also has the hoses. All 3 for around $10.00. I will start a new thread next week when I am ready to tear into the pump replacement project. I hope replacing the pump will cure my issues. This is my daily driver, and with my wife and I both working full time, and 2 boys that play baseball, I really need my truck.....
