Think I located the "Holy Grail" of ZF's

Found this at a boneyard.
The model "S 5-42" external slave.
Is this the one that will bolt onto my 84 F-150 302?

Three threads...
You need an INTERNAL slave.
No Windsor pattern ZF came with an external slave.

The S-47 is rated for 50 more ft lbs of torque than the S-42, but you don't need to worry about that.

Jim is, as always, right. The one you want has the slave concentric with the input shaft, not on the outside of the case. So you'll see a hydraulic line going into the innards of the bell housing part. I think the small block pattern is the only one done that way, so that should be your key.

Gary, I'm FAR from always right.

There will be two holes on the side rather than a rubber boot for the clutch fork to fit in.
ANY 4x4 ZF5 gearbox with the concentric slave will suit you.
Try to get some assurance that the syncros are good and it doesn't pop out of reverse.

AND that it always goes into reverse. Mine apparently has a spot on the reverse synchro that is damaged such that it refuses to go in right there. Move the truck forward a bit, or let it roll back a bit if it will, and it'll go in.

So, why is it a worry? The synchros and bearings are about $250 for the parts alone and the work will be ~$400 to replace them. I paid $500 for my ZF and a transfer case.

You guys are "righter" than me.. Oh well I guess I keep looking, Must keep in the grey matter "internal slave cylinder AND Windsor block pattern required" (for me)
So for clarification there are two ZF S 5-42's, and two 47's???
One big block (external slave) and a small block, (internal slave?)

Google image search put one of my pictures and a pic of 'Dad's Truck' loaded for the big trip on the first page of results.

I got a chuckle.

Any Windsor pattern has the internal slave...

There are three patterns.
Windsor/300
385 series (460)
Diesel (6.9 & 7.3)

Up until 1996 they were all s-42
The diesels put a hurt on them and they were uprated to 470 ft lbs (s-47)

There are 3 ZF5's - BBF, SBF, and diesel.

details, details, always in the details.. Good thing I asked you guys, there would be an incredible amount of "Suck" value if I bought this one and tried to line it up to the motor.

Wondering if there is a way to copy the Windsor flange and have the bolt pattern with me so I can line it up on a potential donor. Anyone ever made a copy of the flange the bellhousing mates to?

I'm sure someone has, but I think you can count the bolt holes and take a pic with your phone and be pretty sure you know what one you are looking at.

Just find one with the internal slave and a 4x4 flange on the back.
It will bolt up. (it has to!)

You can clearly see there's two little slots and no rubber boot on the outside.

Try and get the raised floor plate along with the gearbox.

These are very tall and you will have problems you need to fix with a big hammer otherwise.

Amen! You NEED that cover. I considered modifying the standard one - no way, Jose.
