Weight question?

Weight question?
I scaled the truck this evening a couple times. The first was with my cap, tire chains, other chain stuff, hitches, and 190lbs of weights (extra weight for traction in the snow). Truck scaled 9300lbs.
So I took everything out, took the cap off, and put my tonneu cover back on and it scaled 8500lbs.
Some literature I came across from Ford showed the curb weight at ~7812lbs - 2011 F350 crew cab 172" WB, 4x4, diesel.
Did I miss something? I don't think my tonneu and the other crap I had in the bed were over 600lbs...

Also, when Ford weighs the truck, it is a stripped down model so that none of the weight is added. All manufacturers are known to do this, as it lets them keep their towing numbers a little higher. Everything they added, like Navi, carpet, everything not on a basic truck, weighs more. To make you feel better, I scaled my '10 F350(same truck as I have now, just different engine) and mine weighed 9300 pounds with my toolbox in place.

I don't get it either K. My F250 weighs in at 9000 with me and all my "stuff". Doesn't leave me much room for passengers, luggage, and trailer tongue weight. I know for a fact that 90% of the time I drive I am over the 5ton GVWR. I've got to get a 350 next time.
Plus side? All that mass makes our SD trucks the most stable and safe towing machines in the world. (Slight exaggeration but I love these trucks for how well they tow things.)

All the options add up especially on a King Ranch model. Your moonroof, step bars, 20" tire option, heavier leather seats, HVAC system for seats and any other options like dual alternator, fifth wheel prep or aftermarket goose/5th wheel hitch all add extra weight to the "base" weight. Stepping up to the 20" tires adds around 100 lbs by itself.
Just FYI, my F350 CC LB Ultimate Lariat with a B&W hitch, AMP steps, factory tonneau cover and a bed mat weighs right around 8500 with me in the seat (240) and a full tank of fuel. Add in all my usual "stuff" that I carry such as tools, gloves, hitches, etc and I'm up around 8800 before I add passengers.

If you start looking at each individual item you put into your truck it would probably amaze you at how much you're adding. For instance my low profile toolbox weighs 55 pounds empty, the bed mat is another 50 pounds, 5th wheel prep kit 140 pounds, air bags 55 pounds. This doesn't count the tools in the box, floor mats, stuff in the door panels, CD's, stuff in the console, miscellaneous crap that has collected behind and under the seats.... well you get the idea.
My '12 F250 6.7 long bed 2WD XL weighs in ready to travel with the wife, the dogs, a full tank of fuel, ice chest, tools and wood for the camp fire... at 8180 the last time I ran it across the CAT scale.
I wanted to see exactly how much pin weight I could add and still be legal... Since then I've trimmed a goodly amount of that weight by cleaning out the tool box, losing the bed mat and the tool box in preparation for the new 5'er.

Before I bought mine, we weighed my buddies 2011 4x4 CCLB loaded Lariat dually. Full tank of diesel, nothing worth noting in the truck, other than the goose ball and hooks (factory Reese), and NO driver. 8860#. Have not gotten mine on the scale yet, but I've got a few extra options, the airbags, and backrack, so I'm sure it's over 9k.

One thing I will never understand is why does the weight of my bigger tires legally take away from my payload. I could see that weight being taken away from towing but its below my suspension so why payload?
According my my registration I should have a payload of 4460# but in reality is just about 3300 with me in it
