Hey.. nice to see another Newfie here.. welcome to the site. I'm from Grand Falls originally.
You're getting good advice here it should help you narrow down your problem. I don't know if I missed it or not but what started all this anyway... why are you looking to have motor work done?
to bring up to speed on what my problem is. i have a 1995 ford f150 and last fall i began losing heat from the cab and experinced some over heating in my engine. so after replacing the thermostat and flushing the system, i still ended up with the same problem. i used some kind of additive in the rad in hopes of saving the engine. there was a small knock but after i drained the engine oil and replaced it with some Lucas additive with the new oil, the knock disappeared. so i began seeking advice of what i could do and luck should have it i happened upon this site. the best thing so far. now i am trying to perform a compression test to determin wheather or not i can get away with just replacing the gaskets for the time being. until i find another engine. i am thinking of rebuilding my original engine if it's not damaged too bad. this test will hopefully help me with this decision. i got some confusing advice from the local machenist about the copression testing. something to do with how the compression holds or drops as i do the test. to be able to tell if i have a piston ring or head gasket problem. i couldn't understand what a compression test had to do with finding a blown head gasket. so i put my trust in the people of this site and of course they did not disappoint me. i am quite happy with the help i've been getting. by the way glad to hear your from the rock. i live in Cornerbrook right now but i'm from Hampden. welcome aboard. thanks T.C.M.
thanks guys, i will pull all the plugs at once. i tried one compression tester today but the darn thing didn't work. it just wouldn't seal, so i'm gonna try again tomorrow. hopefully i'll get one that works cause i want to get to the bottom of this before it's too late. if it's not already. finding these 4.9s that are in good working order are hard to come by. i really don't want to resort to having to rewire the whole truck over just to fit a 8 cylinder in. i have this truck as a work truck and as far as work engines go, the 4.9 is one of this best so i'm told. so i'm hoping against hope that some good luck will come my way. either by my engine being ok, or having the luck finding another good one. they don't make trucks like these older ones anymore. they seem like they were built for rough and tough abuse a truck was meant for. not saying the newer ones can't take it but not like the old ones. besides the price of these newer trucks these days make you want to be a little more gentle. anyway i hope i have better luck tomorrow, and i'll be sure to share my results with you guys. after all it's you that have kept my courage up to continue with trying to solve this problem. i thank you guys and of corse gals too very much. T.C.M.
