429 wont start

I have a 77 f250 with a 429 in it, after you drive it and it gets warm and then you shut it off, it wont start again for about 20 mins to 45 mins. it has msd on it and I was told the box could be going bad. is there anything else it could be thanks

You have to establish why it wont start. After it's dead, check spark, make sure it's getting fuel to the carb. take a peak at the choke, make sure it's not partially on when it's hot.

Sounds like a bad ignition box to me. Well, that or the distributor pickup coil.

I would guess that it's flooding. Float bowl could be leaking or overheating causing gas to boil and flood. Do you have signs of flooding? Also do you have to crank it alot when cold (like the bowl is empty)?

Sounds heat related, seeing as how the truck starts fine when cold. I heard somewhere that the MSD coils don't like to get hot...so it may be cutting out once warm.

On another note...my truck had a bad coil wire. When cold, the copper end in the coil was large enough to make contact on the inside lug of the coil. When hot however, it would shrink...causing it to "disconnect".

Wait. When you try to start it when warm...what happens? Sounds like your timing could be advanced too far.

Could be that the coil continues to get hotter after you shut her off and then quits. When I've had a bad coil it just quit even while still running. Don't know specs on MSD, but if you do an internet search you may find the resistance specs for the coil and you can check when hot.

okay this is how it goes. ill go out and start it, starts right up. never had a problem for 3 years. ill take it out get the motor warm and come back home shut it off, start it again shut it off do that a few times then about 10-20 minutes later itll just crank and crank and crank. when I pump it and then i put my foot to the floor and hold it itll kinda diesel barely for a half second and keep cranking.
