Wheel binding?

Hi everyone,

I know this has been covered before in many places, but I'm having issues with either my transfer case or my rear diff (limited slip) on my 1999 Lincoln Navigator.

It sounds like the drive-line is binding a little in slower turns. I've changed front and rear gear oil, and t-case fluid. I added friction modifier to the rear. I've tried pulling the big fuse under the hood for the t-case and it makes no difference, which is where my situation seems different from anything else I can find by searching.

Possible solutions I can come up with from reading might be:
1) Change t-case fluid again
2) Change t-case shift motor
3) Clean/replace speed sensors
4) Replace t-case clutch packs
5) Replace rear diff clutch packs
6) Sell it

Any help narrowing my list would be greatly appreciated... I don't want to (and can't aid to) start throwing money at it!

Thanks.

The front clutch in the transfer case is broken.

Crap. Could you explain how you came to this conclusion? Is it a DIY job or do you need specialist equipment?

Thanks...

By pulling fuse #104 (assuming you pulled the correct one) there should be no power going to the front clutch and therefore the front clutch should be disengaged. Since you've killed the power and the front clutch is still engaged, then it has to be a mechanical failure that is causing it to stay locked in.

It's a DIY job if you have the tools and skills to remove and disassemble a transfer case. You'd know that better than I.

So no chance it's just the shift motor not disengaging properly?

Could also still be the rear diff, couldn't it? I'd throw another modifier in there, it is an easy $5 fix if that's the issue.

Nope. The shift motor only switches from hi to low and back, it has nothing to do with engaging/disengaging the front clutch. But you can always remove the shift motor and move the cam manually to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks alloro, I still prefer the $5 fix! I have no problem shifting from 4HI to 4LO so I think I'll leave the shift motor alone... if it ain't broke don't fix it, right?
