I need to know what my highboy is capable of towing. Dana 60 rear, dana 44 (from 78 f250) front, 428, c6 np205.... What was the factory rating for trailer towing?
Considerations would be radiator, trans cooler, rear gear and tire size. With a high capacity radiator, trans cooler, not too big tires and 4.10's 6-8000# should be straightforward. More than that with care.
I have a 76 F250 4x4 highboy; 460 engine. It has a 10,000 frame hitch. I toll a 7,000 trailer over the Cascade mountains without problems. Sorry, I do not know what they are rated for tolling.
Its brakes will be its limiting factor.......the C6 is a strong tranny, and the 428 will certainly pull most reasonable loads better than a 2bbl 360....
I have a 4 row aluminum radiator with dual electric fans. A 12"x14" transmission cooler. And have hydroboost brakes. I have 35" tires and 410 gears. I just got a trailer in a trade that's rated at 14k pounds. I'd like to tow my 59 f100 on it. I was going to take it to my rv center and have then strengthen the frame and throw a class 5 hitch on it. They thought it would be fine as long add I didn't go over 10k on the trailer total weight.
My old 78 F250 4.10 Dana 60's F&R with a 351M C6 and NP205 with a 6" skyjacker lift and 315/75r16's, I towed 10k a few times and that was pushing it in my opinion. (coming from a guy who regularly tows a gooseneck totaling 24k behind his signature trucks). It was quite a bit of weight when it came to stopping or taking off. I did have a far from stock truck tho. Stock might not have been to bad.
I would love to have a 2014 f350 but at 20 years old and in college that ain't happening.... but yea it has dual axles and quad brakes on the trailer. I'm thinking its doable but should push more then that weight.
You have way more truck than you need for the trailer and truck you're talking about. I wouldn't think twice about towing that with my half ton, 300 six with 4 speed truck with a 9", 3.50 gears and 33" tall tires.
This is a '52 F3 with a dump bed. VERY heavy, but my truck had no problem pulling it.
I don't think yall might realize just how big this trailer is. 24', empty weight of 4880ish lbs..... Max gvwr 14000 lbs. Haha this thing is massive! Needed a trailer for hauling my 59, hauling a rental scissor lift, tractor, etc. Traded two 390's for this big boy. Ill get more pics. All the railings come off and its a giant flat bed.
Im also picking up a Warn 6500lb winch tomorrow for it.
Never tow anything in overdrive, ...EVER. (when towing with a vehicle that HAS overdrive)
Put a trans cooler on it.
Make sure the trailer brakes work properly.
Unless you convert it to a dove tail or have 8 foot ramps, how do you plan on getting a vehicle up there? I think your truck will still do ok, just take your time getting around and watch the turns and stops.
Wow, I could tow my F-250 Super Duty Diesel 8' bed on that thing. Probably need another Super Duty diesel to pull it though. Your truck should pull it ok. Just use good judgement when braking and try to not climb any mountain pass's with it. Nice trailer and a pretty good deal on it.
Haha yea its massive! The rear drops down and then it also has ramps that attach to that to drive stuff onto it. Ill take pics this afternoon I have a tranny cooler and c6 with no overdrive so should be good I hope!
