Hey proud Ford owners. I want to thank everybody for your great advice about my power steering pump issues. I have gotten engine completely tore down. Replaced the cam phasers, timing chains and guides, crank gear and ONE timing chain tensioner. Now I have run into a new obstacle. The left timing chain tensioner went back on with no problems. The 2 bolts screwed right in and tightened. As I was trying to start the 2 bolts for the right side tensioner, the bolts went in about a quarter of the way then just stop. The bolts are fine, but the threads in the block are out of line I would say. They aren't stripped, but I think that when I tried to tighten them the tensioner was putting pressure on the bolts and they didn't start strait. Has anybody ran into this problem and if so what did you do about it? Is there any type of thread chaser or a tool of that nature that will clean up the threads in the block? Again I would appreciate any advice anybody has to give. Thanks guys
Right side tensioner is for passenger side, if you tried installing opposite you may have caused stripped threads in block. If you tried installing without the tensioners fully retracted then you could have stripped the threads.
Use a tap to straighten up the block threads. If they cannot be straightened install heli-coil or some type of thread insert. Use new bolts or at least install blue thread locker on bolts. If one failed the engine would be ruined.
You may want to rotate engine by hand wrench to be sure timing is correct before re-installation of timing cover.
Thanks for the input. I used the correct tensioners according to the side indicated on the actual tensioner. And I used a tap to clean up the threads and got the bolts in and tight. So chains are on and phasers are on. I turned the motor by hand and the phasers and the crank gear are in the right positions, plus I felt no resistance from valves hitting cylinders or anything so I am positive that I have it in time. I appreciate all the help from everyone and I love this website. This is a huge job and everybody's advice has been much appreciated. The hard stuff is over so it's just putting it all back together now. I'll post when I'm done and let everyone know how it's running. Thanks again
If you are not sure that the oil system did not lose it's prime then you need to pressurize it through an oil port. If you did not replace the oil filter or drain the oil then it should still be primed. The Modular's are harder to prime than the older engines.
