im thinking i would like to remove and replace heater and a/c from my truck and replace it with non a/c unit. no vacume leaks and more room. i think it looks better as well. so, how much trouble is it ?

Just for kicks and giggles check out this site. Several people on this site have used their kit. Do a search for Nostalgic Air. Their kits tuck up under the dash. No box in the engine bay. http://nostalgicac.com/1973-1979-f-s...c-defrost.html

I am doing this to my truck, but i have a complete non AC donor cab, got both cabs completely stripped, cut firewall section that mounts the heater box from the non AC cab and weld it into the giant hole the AC cab has after the unit is removed.
You will have a really big hole to fill, what Shane123 did is the best fix, out here in So Cal it's so hot I hacked the hole open and added A/C, you must be in a cooler part of the country.
I took mine out and mounted a stock non ac set up in. Friend ofmine had a cab going to the scrapper. I cut the fire wall where the hole was for the blower motor to stick out big enough to fill the ac hole. I trimmed it to fit, then just drilled holes in it and bolted it in the way the ac unit was. I used strip caulk to seal it up before I bolted it on. Worked pretty good. I used button head allen screws and can barely tell it bolted in.
Here is a picture of the hole in the firewall:
If you use the heater unit form a non a/c truck; the controls are a bit different. Plus the a/c truck the vent air option is though the a/c vents in the dash and the non a/c cab's have air vents; one on the heater box on passenger side and driver side is in the kick panel. My truck was a a/c truck; but the cab was rusty, so I change it over to a non a/c cab. Without the a/c the engine bay is a lot cleaner!!
