I am recent owner of a 2001 Excursion LTD 4x4 w/ 7.3L I love this ride. I bought this truck to tow my 8500lbs camper. We traveled all the way across the country to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon from Florida. My check engine light came on shortly after started towing the camper. I pulled into a local auto part store to pull a code. They were no help. The code said Bank 1. ???? After we unhooked the camper in AZ and drove around for a while, the light went off. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
You might have to take it to a dealer or at very least a shop that has a scanner capable of ready your codes, without that we have no idea what the issue might be...
Chris,
Thanks. Is this going to be a common thing to take it to the dealer? I'm the type of guy who likes to thing myself when I can. Somebody told me it might be a sensor on waste gate?
It could be any number of things. There are about 100 different reasons why the check engine light will turn on. Do you want to fix the problem or change all the parts that could turn on the check engine light, hoping to hit the one that caused it before you go broke?
If you knew what code it was exactly that may help instead of just bank one. You can buy a code reader as well they usually run between 70-1000s depending on what type you can get.
I went for the option of a scangauge 2,which attaches to your obd2 port and can give you useful information like trans temp, cylinder temp, intake temp, mpg, load, throttle position and the list goes on. This cost me around 160$. And is a universal code reader.
The most useful tool in my toolbox is my code reader. If you take it to a dealership, they will charge you a diagnostic fee of $80+ to read the codes. I bought my code reader for about the same and have used it on multiple cars.
I guess I'm going to have to get a code reader. This is driving nuts. On our way back from church the stupid light went off. Coming home and I had to punch the throttle to get on the interstate. The darn thing came back on. It's a evil little demon.
You do need a computer (I use a simple notepad computer) to use this. Others are self-contained, and there are a bunch now that interface via Bluetooth to your cell phone via an app on your phone and a small plug-in device.

What is the App for the cell phone. Does it work on a Android? What is the computer that hooks up to ECM? This sounds like a great way to monitor the truck.

Yes, there are apps for android phones. Here is one that has a lot of good reviews.
