E40D shift points at WOT with 5.8 (351w)?

Hi,
I just completed a major swap, I went from a Mazda 5sp 5.0 to E40D with a 5.8, I'll post details along with pictures later...

I was able to use the instrument panel with the tack, and after a few test runs I did a full throttle run. At WOT the E40D is shifting at 5500 rpm. I was told by the guy I bought the transmission from that it had been rebuilt. The shift is nice and crisp, just wondering if this is approximate RPM that a stock E40D shifts at.

Thanks.
Greg.

Since I can't edit my post, I'll reply to myself... It is actually shifting at 4600 RPM, not 5500...

The shift point would have to depend on the engine. Normally automatic trannies should shift somewhere between the horsepower peak and redline. I have an E4OD in my E350 motorhome with 460 V8 and just put in a tach. I floored it down a freeway ramp and second gear wound out to 4000 rpm before it shifted (hp peak is around 3500), but a 351 should rev higher than a truck 460.

INLINE SIX POWER!
300 Cubic Inches of Low RPM Truck Torque! And twin-I-beams too!

I have a 95 F150 with an E4OD. I believe my shifts around 4600.

Thanks for the replies.

Well after some driving my nice hard shifts have gone soft. I think that after having the battery disconnected the computer was at first in learn mode and was shifting hard. I wish there was a way for it to learn that I actually like the hard shift

Greg,

You can get a shift kit to firm up the shifts. I have heard the E4OD is noted for being a soft shifter. Frimer shifts will extend the life of the tranny as the soft shift (so I have read) is obtained by having it actually run in both gears during the shift. This generate slippage and heat. I put a Banks TRanscommand electronic module on my motorhome E4OD (about $260 from bankspower.com) which is easy to install (about 1 hr under truck) and gives you firm shifts when under load or heavy accel, but softer shifts under normal driving so you don't get jerked all the time. Possibly a valve body shift kit is the best way to go (maybe lots cheaper cost). These install with the pan off (I believe that is all). Other kit types may be available (see B&M website) and may cost much less. Also, I generally lock out the OD in city traffic as it will shift into OD at way too low a speed. Some good E4OD info on this site:
