I had the auto hubs replaced on my 95 f150 with no problems. I am sure yours can be changed without any problem as well. I would make sure you knew exactly what you were doing if you did it, or take it to a good mechanic. I took mine to my home town mechanic. He does good work and it was alot cheaper then a dealership. Yes very easy to do. Only cost me the 90 bucks for the hubs (Warn standards) and 8 buck for the snap ring pliers (required). If you don't have a pair of snap ring pliers you definetly need them. It only took me and my buddy an hour and a half to do. You don't even need to jack the tires off the ground. I installed them last month and have been very happy with the results. A great advantage is now you can have 2 wheel low range. It definitly helps when trying to park or manuever in tight places. The automatic hubs are crap but at least you get to keep the nifty looking caps. I polished mine up and now they are hanging up on the patio.
Its a fairly easy job. You will need: 1) spindle nut conversion kit 2)special socket for the spindle nut assembly (30 ish bucks at any auto parts store) 3) manual locking hubs (check internet, many different strengths made (stock to rock crawler) 4) a magnet to remove the litle steel key which sits in the groove in the spindle (remove as much grease as possible with a q-tip and the key will come out easily. You will not regret this job. I blew three sets of auto hubs while my 95 ranger was under warranty (geologist in NM). I recommend a quick clean and lube when you rotate the tires, they should last forever.
You only need the conversion kit if the caps on the automatic hubs have three screws holding it on. If you have five or six screws on the cap then you do not need it. My hubs had 5 screws and i did not buy the conversion kit. The only required tool I had to buy was the snap ring pliers.
