1994 F150 XLT 5.0 Automatic extended cab 4x4..
I have owned this truck for 8 years. It currently has 179xxx and runs great. A few months ago I replaced the ABS sensor and the rear fuel pump. When I bought the truck I replaced the front fuel pump with a new Ford pump. Now when running on the front tank it backfires and looses power under a load. I also occasionally get a check engine light. It’s fine on level ground. When it starts backfiring I can switch tanks and it immediately picks up and pulls strong and within a mile the light goes off. Everything points to a bad front fuel pump. However when I check the fuel pressure it is the same on either tank. I am amazed that the Ford pump ($265.00 in 2006) only lasted 8 years considering I drive the truck very seldom. Does anyone have any ideas other that replacing the front fuel pump again?
You need to rule out a fuel problem and to do that setup a fuel pressure gauge so you can see it inside the cab while driving to see if pressure drops when the poor performance occurs. Also pull the codes, doesn't matter if the light is currently on or not codes are stored for persistent problems.
