I was trying to find a diesel leak I took the cover off of the fuel pump and touched the top of the pump (engine was running) it immediately made my engine run rough almost to a stall check engine light came on then in a few seconds it returned to normal. My pump was leaking so I replaced it after installing new one I tried touching the top of the pump again to see what would happen and the same thing happened with the new pump as well. I was just curious if anyone else has noticed this and could tell me why it does this. Thanks for any info. 97 F350 PSD
just some advice www.freeautoadvice.com is a pretty good tech forum. I think my last 3 or 4 post had zero results over here they nailed it on the head over there.
Fuel is drawn from the fuel tank by the diaphram section of the fuel pump. The fuel pump circulates fuel at a low pressure (3-10 psi) first through the fuel filter and then back to the second stage of the fuel pump.
During the second stage, the piston-actuated section of the pump supplies fuel at a pressure of (40 psi) into the cylinder head fuel galleries. When you press on the fuel inlet from tank(top right) it changes the pressure momentarily starving the pump for fuel. It doesn't take much pressure the top inlets are sitting on a spring

Doesn't seem like a fair comparison. On this board you posted:
I took the cover off of the fuel pump and touched the top of the pump
and on that board you changed it to:
During troubleshooting I pressed on the top right post of the pump which sent my engine to a rough idle almost shutting it down. It returned to normal whithin seconds. I replaced the pump and just for curiousity pressed on it again with the same results. Does anyone know why this is.
It's just possible that 1 or 2 of the 150,000+ members of this site would have known you were compressing the diaphragm if you had given us the same information.
