I have a 1996 f150 with a 5.8 liter auto and its 2 wheel drive and has approximately 30,000 miles the problem I seem to have with it is that it surges when you are driving at a constant speed and the rpms are between 900 to 1300 it does not seem to matter what gear the transmission is in it will act up at 12mph and again at 25mph have tried fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs and wires, throttle position sensor, idle air control solenoid with no luck the check engine does not come on and when I had it checked for codes they said none where found nobody can seem to determine the problem and suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks
hmmm... sounds very similar to a problem that a lot of us inline-six guys have (esp. those w/ manual trannies). Usually, the surging has to do with something in the emissions setup. I'd look into the EGR valve (read about making a restrictor plate in the archives if you're interested) or possibly take it to an exhuast specialist and have them check out the cats (although 30K is awfully early for a clogged cat). Just my 2 cents.
Thanks for the reply Mike I tried the restrictor plate this weekend it seemed to help the problem out a lot but it turned on my check engine light on so I drilled out the hole a little larger and the surging problem returned so some time this week I will take it to a muffler shop to get the cats checked out do you know a way to fool the computer so the light will not come thanks again Dave
