hey guys in a little bit i am going to hop up my new f150 with a 400 and was wondering if there were any common problems to fix while i am in there, for example i have heard they have a bit of an oil flow problem, any other problems i need to fix while i am in the motor, i am planning on doing carb, intake, cam and lifter with better timing chain( also heard these are a problem) and headers. thanks for helping a new guy
ahhh yes that is one thing i left out, my intended uses are towing and occasionally kicking the crap out of my friends lime green 03 mustang, which i almost beat with my 300 inline six
definitely check your balancer. sometimes the 400 cracks them where the crank key goes. I'd get a edelbrock performer intake. since you'll more than likely pull the motor to do the can, change transmission seals. make sure your flywheel is flat across, the 4wd flywheel is cheaper and fits 2wd. check your vacuum lines. take your time with the cam. If it requires a stall converter get one. follow cam break in instructions. make sure the cam and intake work on the same rpm range.
Oil problems with the 351M/400 are a bunch of hooey, unless you plan on constantly turning 5000 RPMs and over. How this rumor got started is that the cam berrins get oil first, then the mains. Tim Meyer makes some cam berrins that addresses this "issue," with involves some drilling/tapping some plugs, etc.
For most of us, the oiling system is just fine. Cams, etc? Don't forget the lifters, springs, retainers and keepers that go with the cam. AND the break in oil!!! The cam decision depends on what you want to do with the vehicle, compression ratio you're looking for, gearing, etc. If you want one that's a step up or two from stock, some "RV" cams aren't too bad.
then you don't have to worry about the converter lol. get a Lunati bracket master II can kit with the recommended springs and retainers and valve locks.
yes hydraulic flat tappet. Jegs and summit sell a cam and lifter kit. I would go to lunatipower. com and get the valve springs part number too. I have the cam and lifter kit with comp cams double valve springs 924-16 with the CC retainers and locks. comp cams high energy push rods and comp cams magnum roller rocker arms with guide plates. the 400 has a problem with the stock pedestal mount rockers. I had my bosses milled down so I could use the adjustable rocker arms.
is there such a thing as a cam that is good for towing, and has a bit of a lopey idle but not too much that there isnt sufficient vacuum for the engine accesories/brakes
