5 Star tune

Im very interested in getting the tune for my truck but concerned about the warranty aspect of it. I know I read on here that u can flash back to stock before taking to dealer. Has anyone ran into trouble at the dealer when doing so?

Hi,

Depends on the dealer. Many dealers will generally say it will void the warranty. However, there are a few dealerships that may allow a tuner. Many will wait until the warranty services run out and then place a tuner on to the truck. Remember it generally you have to pay to play.

Good Luck.

some things to ponder....tuner will be for what more giddy up empty, loaded trailer rv, mudding or just cause yah can....will it damage my truck if i do what I plan on doing after the tuner is installed?

So it will help the deductive reasoning portion of being willing to play and pay....I used the Superchip tuner on mine at 50k or so and knew it was for pulling an rv and I never did dog the truck like when I was young and really really dumb....(yeah now I'm old and still......) So anyways if you do install enjoy but it's hard to keep a light foot with so much fun factor on tap....

I am also unsure what to do
I want it to tow my 5th wheel and to try and improve mileage
My 2011 was back at the dealer every other month with shift problems but this truck 2013 (knock on wood) has been OK except for the ticking once in a while on startup
Almost had my wife buy one for my birthday but instead got a Tablet

My co-worker retired last year and had bought a Chebby 3/4 to pull his 30' RV. took it to Florida and michigan......never complained about the truck other then it sucking down the fuel but he sill got 10-11 mpgs to which I responded sweet......so our economy being what it is we all think in term of MPGs more often then we used to so it may cloud the perspective of a 3/4 ton gasser...... but......lower up front cost, oil changes and all that goes with the new EPA regulated oil burners I'd say enjoy if if does not cripple the check book.......

Mine still runs so well it's really hard to justify 45k for a used gasser when I can use it in my upcoming retirement account sigh......will have to contract for a few years to pay off house, AR-10, AR15, MP9s and well soooooo many toys sooooo little cash.......

Well, I chose to bite the bullet and install the 5Star Tune from Mike. I could not live with the "drive by wire" feel. I drive a 2001 SD with a 5.4 for work and when I step on the gas it reacts and goes! Then I get into my new SD and the throttle response is ridiculously slow.

I am using my new SD for my own electrical contracting business. Once I loaded it up with the ladder rack, tool boxes, material, tools, etc. the throttle response became even worse. I estimate there's 2K of extra weight in the truck now ( I had to install Air Lift air bags to prevent the rear from sagging almost to the bump stops). The tuner gave me the throttle response and shift points I was hoping the truck had from the factory. I am very pleased with the tuner and will never put it back to stock.

Just last month I had to bring my truck to the dealer because I had transmission fluid leaking all over under the truck. I got off work early one day and decided to take my truck to the dealer. Yep, you guessed it, I forgot to put the truck back to stock!! So, I did not mention anything to them about the tuner. They had to pull the tranny and transfer case out and replace a seal. Then of course take it for a test drive. When I picked up my truck they did not say anything about discovering the tuner. Well, I consider myself lucky, and stupid! Next time it goes in I will be sure to put it back to stock.

Thanks guys for all your responses.

The only reason I have the truck is for towing my travel trailer. Its a 24' Forest River Wildwood 24TBSS with a super slide. It weighs about 7500 lbs loaded. I live in Northern CA and deal with a lot of hills. Just trading in my 06 6.0 diesel, I want to ensure the 6.2 make handle the grades without any issues.

I think I'll probably get the tuner from 5Star pretty soon.

I am slightly confused by 5 Star Tuning. Does this company add programs to tuners like SCT, etc? Or does this company actually have their own 5 Star tuners? 5 Star tuning website appears go sell more than tuners like other similar performance sites.

He uses SCT handheld tuners. You get a choice of 5 of his custom tunes to load into it.

I've personally never even run the the SCT strategy tunes it has on it, only the custom tunes from 5-Star.

If you're like me, you'll dread going back to stock after getting used to the tune. Huge improvement over stock. I'm at over a year running the 93 tune and haven't had any issues.

Matt,

Are all three of your tunes 93 octane? I have two 87 octane tunes and one 93 octane "performance" tune on the 2002.

Just the hassle of having to switch fuels timed up with retuning kind of sucks. On my 2012 - which is similar to yours - I am thinking of going with all 87 octane. Btw, did you fit those 35's in there with just a leveling kit? And did you notice a drop in performance or mileage going up to 35" tires?

I have the plow prep package on mine so I shouldn't need a front leveling kit but not sure I can fit 35's under there, but would love to!! I also have the Nitto Mud Grappler M/T's which really talk to you on the freeway but I hear the Toyos are a little more tolerable. What have you found?

I have the 87 economy, 87 performance, and 93 performance tunes. I haven't even tried the either of the 87 tunes, the 93 is so good.

My truck had some serious rake on it between the 350 blocks and the wheelbase of the truck, so I put a 2.5" leveling kit on the front. The 35's fit fine on the stock rims, no issues, no rubbing. My tires are 35x11.50's, didn't want to go to a 12.50 on the stock wheel. My mileage decreased, but it sucked before so I knew it'd decrease even more. And with the tuner and my heavy foot, forget it. I'm about 10mpg city, 12-14hwy right now.

I'm not sure how much the snow plow pkg lifts the front over stock, but I'm pretty certain I could've cleared these tires with it stock. I've never ridden in a truck with a set of mud grapplers, but those look like they'd throw down some pretty significant howling on the road. I actually like the sound of the Toyo's, not too loud, but enough to know they're there. If I feel the need to drown them out, the stereo gets cranked.

Does anyone know if its ok to tow with the 91 performance tune, as opposed to the 91 tow/perf tune? its just the 91 performance tune seems to have more grunt than the 91 performance/ tow tune
