looking at the picture of the body tag, what makes this a F450 other than maybe GVW?
I am not sure about the frame itself. It may be unique as well.
Looks a little suspect to me, the fender emblems say F350 but everything else is definitely F450 including the VIN. Probably means the front clip may have been replaced at some point in time.
the axle code of 73 also only came with the f450 trucks.this is 5.13 gearing.rla is correct with the rear axle bing a dana 80.
here is a little bit i put together for my garage, briefly explaining the truck:
The F-Super Duty 1987-97 (the original super duty prior to '99 pickups) was introduced to bridge the gap from the F350 to medium duty trucks. It was a commercial cab & chassis 2WD dually only optioned truck.Known at the time as the "One Ton Plus."
It sports a HD frame, the hydroboost brake system w/ 4 wheel disc brakes.Though they are 2WD trucks, they are equipped with 4WD transmissions but, rather than a transfer case, they come with a drive line emergency/parking brake. A HD dana 80 rear axle that came from ford with gear ratio options intended for two purposes; heavy hauling & towing. They came in various wheelbase lengths with up to a 15,000 LB GVWR.It's widely known as the F-450 equivalent with many auto stores listing parts under either name. These trucks are easy to spot with their pickup size cabs, yet unique F-Super Duty fender emblems & 10 lug wheels.
the 8th digit in the vin denotes the 7.3l idi diesel (non turbo.)
i just so happen to have written a description of this too.

The Navistar International IDI was the longest produced diesel engine offered in the Ford F-series trucks (1983-1994.) With the Navistar IDI still holding this record today, which consists of three generations and a total of eleven straight years. The 6.9l and the 7.3l Navistar diesel engine became known as one of the most reliable and sought after diesels.Despite its modest power by modern standards, many enthusiasts still claim it was,and currently still is, Fords best era of diesel equipped trucks for reliability, affordability and a common favorite: simplicity.Since it has no on board pcm nor emissions.with many reports of well over 300,000 miles and counting.
don't touch this one if you don't need it.she wont get the economy the f250/350 will.
if it's what your after, being a rust free 2wd Florida truck with low miles and his parts replacement list,it could be a decent buy.
There were significant changes made in 88 when they stopped the 6.9 and went to the 7.3(very similar engines, yet different) Saying there are the same would be like saying a 302 is the same as a351
the engines are the same like those comparisons just with a few upgrades is all.
the optional turbo engines of '93&94 probably have more differences between them than the 6.9 to 7.3l n/a's.yet still those are the "same" engines.

As for comparing them to the 315/400 and 429/460. They are different too, but with the Only difference being a 1/2" stoke between them, they are a hell of a lot closer than the IDI engines

The ad says that the F350 badges were added.
Did Ford not make the F450 model then? They called it a Superduty?
What do you suppose the fuel economy would be with that 5.13?
I am a lot more familiar with the 99+ trucks. I like the idea of the IDI.
Wiki had a good writeup on it:
Thanks.

I would expect in the 6-9 MPG range for fuel. But I am no a diesel expert. Be aware many insurance companies charge a premium for commercial duty trucks like this one. Likewise when you try to get plates for it. Some states will $soak$ you.

Thanks. A lot of that information is coded on the door sticker. I had a decoder for the newer trucks but not for these.
