After rebuilding the rearend in my truck last weekend i realized that I was out of hand cleaner...you know, the orange stuff as my little one calls it.
I reached under the kitchen counter and grabed the first bottle that resembled dish soap that I could put my greasy hands on.
It was Cascade diswasher soap...the liquid kind. I thought what the heck it works great in the dishwasher... I found it to work great ... even disolved the grease under the fingernails... instantly
I know not everyone has a dishwasher but if you do and run out of hand cleaner... give it a shot
If you use dish soap grab some ordinary granulated white sugar ad a teaspoon full into your palm of your hand the grit works to loosen the grime while the soap cuts the grime. Your hands will be sticky so then you have to use just straight soap and wash your hands for a second time.
I keep a small bottle of Fast Orange smooth in the truck and in the house I have Rub N Rinse with pumice in the basement I have a 4 litre jug of Go Jo orange with pumice.
Actually the Fast Orange smooth works just as good I keep it in the truck because you can keep your hands clean especially in the work I'am in. The smooth allows you to wipe your hands dry with paper towl most places I'am at doesn't have water available.
I have used powdered laundry soap but its too hard on your hands it will dry them out too fast and if you got any cuts SOB it stings.
I tend to use anything that is around. I prefer orange clean or somthing like that, but usually a can of break cleaner cuts through the grease pretty good. Tends to let ya know about all of your recent nics and cuts though.
Old Transmissions fluid helps to get most of the grime off your hands. After the tranny fluid, all you have to do is hit it with go-jo. Also, a parts cleaner is a good hand cleaner in a pinch.
Whisk Laundry Detergent is good to clean your hands. I worked in a printing shop and that is what we used to clean printers ink off us and the press. Works the same on grease and if you want to clean a gun! Feld strip, and clean with whisk and hot water!
As for store bought: I like and have had good luck wiith the old stand buy; GloJo (with and without grit) and water type the Snap On brand!
I still go for that "orange stuff", and it looks like they changed the formulation and have added some grit to it. Cleans really well .. I have used it on my metal stool and metal workbench as well!
Got a few canisters of hand cleaner stuff setting around my shop, but I always go for the Go-Jo cream. Smooth, no grit but works like. Just my .02 cee ya
I about got beat when I ran out of my mean green hand cleaner. (this stuff will blow away about anything out there). Used the dawn dish soap. When you get done washing your hands, wash the bottle. Boy was she ready to kill me.
We used to have a go-jo product for our school metal shop. It was brown and very rough but did an excellent job on foundry sand (a mix of motor oil, soot from hot metal, and very fine sand).
Stay away from the waterless hand cleaners, I am suffering thru a bottle right now. Seems the Dawn bottle is getting more attention than the hand cleaner.
