Replace the ignition cylinder or not?

I have an 89 F-150 (6 cyl, 5 spd) and now I have no keys. It seems that my wife was driving it and lost the only set we had (my other set is at the bottom of a lake). I called the local locksmith and he wants $89 per key to make new ones. I can get a new cylinder and 2 new locks for $20 at the local parts store. Since I can't turn the cylinder to the On position to get to the pin, does that mean I will have to remove the steering wheel to get it out? Or am I stuck with getting one made by the locksmith? If I can get to it by removing the wheel, is there anything else I need to look out for, like maybe a security plate or any theft-deterrent devices? Thanks for your help...

Replace the ignition cylinder or not?

I have the instructions for doing this (in a Chiltons manual). The procedure is different if you have a tilt steering wheel than a regular wheel. I will gladly e-mail s digital photo of the instructions if you give me an address and what type steering wheel you have.

Replace the ignition cylinder or not?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Jun-02 AT 03:38 PM (EST)]Is your door key the same as the ignition key?
On my 92 F150 they were the same, so I bought a matched set of locks for the doors and ignition from Ford.

On my 88, the door key is cut backward from the ignition.

If your keys are the same, you could take the lock from your door and take it to the locksmith. He may reduce the cost if he doesn't have to make a house call.
