I'm not really sure what to call it. Cable is kind of vague, but it's a wire that runs through a white sheath from the column all the way up to the gear indicator in the dash. Anyways, last night I broke it taking the lower housing off the steering column to see what I'd need to convert my instrument cluster to led lights.
I broke a rather large chunk out of the plastic, the wire itself is not damaged. However now it's always reading in Drive when in park, and in 1 in any other gear. I want to get this working again. I've thought about taking a piece of small plastic air line, like what you see going up to the rack selector on the shifters for the transmissions of bigger trucks and running a piece of steel cable through it to attempt to replicate the old cable. However, I'm curious as to what an OEM replacement part would cost, but I'm unable to find it. Any ideas that could lead me in the right direction?
LMC has them, but only the 3-speed trans version. The AOD one used to be available a few years ago; & the price was only about $20 then too.
You might be able to combine parts with the C4/6 one, or hunt one down from a dead truck.
Your making one/repairing the old one sounds like a good idea. That's what I have done on several vehicles. As long as you can hold the outer sheath in some way, the string doesn't care if it's in the tube or not if there is a small piece of it gone.
