highway RPM quick question...

Since I don't have a tach in my 85... is this rpm correct for size tire/gear combo? I aso notice if I did change to 3.08 I'm still over 2k, so it wouldn't justify a gear change. Just was curious, since I'm going to pismo next month for the "meet and greet" lol

AFAIK the 3:55s are the lowest (numerically) you can get for a Dana 60 rear.

2300 RPMS isn't that bad, but it can sound high if your exhaust is loud, your insulation is damaged/missing, bad window seals, and/or you have loose, rattling body panels, tools & boxes, etc.

Lol all of the above haha., I have the insulation out right now meaning no carpet and I did notice it was way louder even just in town. I did order new carpet from LMC, I'm going to a grey interior instead of the 80's maroon lol.. I crawled underneath to see if it was a 60 or 70, and it has a 70 stamp on the housing followed by another letter and a big U stamp, so assuming it is a Dana 70U

Makes sense. I had an '84 and an '85 both with Dana 70's and both had 3.55 gears. Made it harder to do the rear brakes, that much was for sure. I think '86 was when the Sterlings really started becoming more popular in the trucks.

Is it harder to do a brake job because you have to pull the axle and hub assembly as one unit? Opposed to just taking the drum off the Sterling unit?

The Dana axle require the removal of the axle shaft, then the hub and drum. Pain in the butt.

I haven't done brakes on a Sterling yet, my '85 has one, not stock. If it has outboard drums then that alone would make the axle switch worth it. I'll check next time I take a wheel off.

That'd figure too, I've been putting off fixing my e-brake because I didn't want to tear into the axle, now it might not be necessary....

Are there different ratios available for the 70 that the 60 doesn't have?

I think the 70 you can do almost a 7.13 r&p as a 60 is good for 5.13 r@p... Don't quote me on it I am mainly it off road guy and not really gearing things for highway lol. But I also believe the offset is different between both differential meaning where the pinion comes in through the case, like I said don't quote me on it and one is a 32 spline (70) and the other is offered a 30 through 35 spline if I remember right (60)..
Besides I still have to take off or out the axle shaft to remove the hub on dual rear wheels at work, and believe it or not they are new vehicles lol like 2012 and 2010

Yeah, the Dana's you have to take the axle shafts out. PITA. The sterling is an outboard drum so nothing comes off except the drum. Soooo much nicer to change brakes on.

That's good to know, now I won't keep putting off checking those brakes and fixing that e-brake.

Had a chance to pull a wheel and check today and LindstrrmJD is right, they are outbound drums! I'd even changed the tires on this rig a couple of times and never noticed.
Damn, I may get spoiled and never work on a Dana again.
