My Ex is an XLT model, as I'm really not fond of leather, but one thing I do like on the limited models is the trip computer/OAT digital indicator on the overhead console. I pulled mine off this morning and there's an unused connector sitting right there where it oughtta be for the display.
Does anyone know if I buy a display unit from a Limited will it work from that plug? I believe that lots of autos use the same wiring harness from base to Gucci models, and it's just matter of what's ultimately installed. Thoughts?
I've been told that most XLTs are pre-wired for it, but I don't know that for a fact....Even if its not prewired it can be done. We just put on in my cousin's XL early '99 F250SD 7.3. Of course we had to run wire up to the temp sensor, and then tap into the harness to get all the correct feeds to get the OHC the correct info for all the MPG stuff. But, I've been told that alot of the XLTs were prewired. Check the connector up there and see where it does, it should run over to and down the passenger side a-pillar and down to another connector in the passenger side kick-panel. My cousin's xl truck had the connector in the kick panel, but only had 2 wires running into it.
If you do some google searching you can find the pinnout diagram for the harness and you can check to make sure all the correct color wires are up there, if so, you'll just have to get a OHC, install it, and plug it in. If not you can run the wires like we did for my cousins truck. Either way it is doable.
I have a big black plug that says Excursion, so in case I forget what I'm driving I can just look up there, and whaddayaknow, I'm driving an Excursion!
I think I'm going to watch for one and see what happens.

Not too easy to find one. I haven't seen any for sale individually. Normally have to buy the whole overhead console, and even then most don't include the display. Here's a pretty reasonably priced one. Overhead Console Digital Display
My '05 cloth XLT just has the grey plug in place of the lie-o-meter too. Was originally part of Uncle Sam's fleet, at least I have carpets and a third row.
HI Curt- Saw Overhead console upgrade for XLT you started a few years back and wondering if any success? My 2004 Ex is also an XLT and would like to perform the same upgrade. Thank you very much in advance! Step.
Hello Curt- HI again. More specifically, mine has a grey male connector anchored in the headliner that is not in use and I would like to know if this is the same "unused" connector you were referring in your initial thread? Are you able to confirm if this grey connector is indeed for trip computer? What I am also bewildered is that I believe the connector that comes out of the trip computer is in the same male gender? Thanks again!
It looks like Curt's last visit here was back in Nov '17, so I'm not sure if he will respond. But yes, that grey connector should be the one for the lie-O-meter in the overhead, it seems that harness is shared by all trim levels and options, you will need to also add the temp sensor that mounts to the header panel/radiator support under the hood.
Also consider starting a new thread to introduce yourself and show off your EX.
Hi Tom, thank you for the greetings and very nice to meet you virtually. Presumably the grey connector is there intended for trip computer add-on, do you know how the actual connection would work? From my research, the connector that comes out of the trip computer is in the same gender as my unused grey connector...
