New Member - basic questions
I need to replace the oil pan gasket this weekend. Will I need anything besides the oil pan gasket itself?
I read in the archives, that I need to raise the engine to do this, I hope I do not need to remove the intake plenum. How much time should I plan on spending to do this job? Any tips or suggestions?
Also, after looking at the cost of a 2002 F150 replacement, I have decided to keep this truck for a long time. I had replaced the original exhaust with a rancho dual unit. This sounds really good and did add noticable low end torque. However this unit now needs to be replaced. I am leaning towards a straight pipe from the cat with either a straight through glass pack or just a Monza tip. What would you all recommend for an after market exhaust.
I also plan to make a K&N style intake.
What other bolt on mods are suggested that really do work?
I am considering Mach underdrive pulleys and Summit short tube headers, are these worth the time and money?
I just want to know what bolt-ons are really worth doing.
thanks in advance,
Ed
Mazda 5 speed.
Replaced the oil pump while I was there (Clevite).
Did not remove the intake plenum. Did not remove pan from vehicle.
In a nutshell.
Remove two bolts attaching transmission to cross-member (3/4 inch).
Drain radiator.
Disconnect inlet and outlet hose from radiator.
(Probably could have gotten away without draining radiator. Did'nt want to put undo stress on the connections/ferrules when motor was
lifted.)
Unattach fan shroud and support shroud on fan.
Lift motor and placed blocks between support bracket and motor mount((2) -2x4x4"(wood spacers)).Jacked motor off oil pan. Put wood spacer
there as well to disperse load. (18 mm for motor mount)
Drop oil pan (6" & 3" 1/4 inch drive extension ).
Remove Oil pickup (13mm oil pump and 9/16 on 3rd bearing - odd but best fit ). Note your working blind when removing
the nut off the 3rd bearing. (Unless you remove the pan)
Snake new gasket through. I tied mine in place with dental floss.
Positioning pan back in place with the gasket seated properly is the
most tedious part of the job. Took an hour for that. A 2nd pair of hands may help.
Whole job took 5-6 hours. I deviated slightly from the Haynes manual
not removing the pan from the vehicle or the intake plenum. I can't comment on if that makes harder or easier.I think the transmission cross member would need to be removed to drop the exhaust far enough.
The F-250 may have a larger engine compartment not sure.
Good luck,
