I'm looking at buying a '96 F150 4X4 with 5.8 (351)and automatic.
I know basicly nothing about 4X4s,and don't really need a 4X4, but this truck is just too nice to pass up, chances are that I would certainly keep the 4X4 differencial, and transfer case serviced, but what else am I looking at?? any known problems with this year? aren't the transfer cases now all electric?? what auto overdrive is likely to be in this truck?? Thanks!!
Not much for problems. You will really want to keep that 4x4 serviced, and a couple times a year, USE IT. You have to use it once in awhile to keep everything in good shape. If you don't use it, problems arise. Just don't use it on pavement. Find some loose dirt, stuff like that a couple times a year. You can also drive around with the hubs locked in (if u have manual hubs) once in awhile to turn everything but the transfer case. You'll want to keep it in good shape because what if happens when you want to sell it sometime, and the 4x4 don't work. Not all of them are electric. Some are push button and some are manually floor shifted. Most people prefer the manually floor shifted kind. Hope that helps a little.
Primary rig is:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Sunroof, and some kablamo Firestoner Wilderness ATs .
Pictures coming soon.
Then theres:
99' Mustang GT 4.6L
88' F-250 Superduty 4x4 351/c6
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 with a
3 spd column shifter. Top speed is 65mph, Go Baby Go!
It has the E4OD transmission. That is the only possible weak point in the truck. They are prone to a lot of problems and are expensive to rebuild. Having said that, most of the bugs were fixed by '95 and it is a heavy-duty unit used on F-350's as well. Try to find out if the transmission fluid was changed frequently. The transfer case and front axle are pretty trouble-free, especially the lever-type 4x4 and manual hubs.
yo,
We have a 96 Bronco 5.0, E4OD, manual Xfer case.
Bought it new in 96 and only had a radiator leak and auto hub(s) blow out by 60k miles.
As the others advised, reg maint is a big factor! Esp for the E4OD, as well as for the engine, hubs, etc.
Try and see the maint. history on it and see if there are any codes.
Good luck!
I have a 1996 F150 4x4 EXT Cab, 160,000 miles.
The truck is pretty good.
The auto hubs went out twice, then I went to manual hubs at about 60,000 miles.
The brakes squeaked now and then. I would have replaced the calipers and pads every 50k miles if I could do it over again.
The brakes are easy to work on. Loaded calipers $55 per side.
The back brakes last forever (well almost).New drums at 124,000 miles.
The U-joints went at about 80,000 miles, then I went to a greaseable type.
The U-joints are easy to work on. U-Joints $12 each.
The starter solenoid relay went at about 100,000 miles ($11 at the auto store).
Looking back on the miles that I drove, it was not a bad ride....
