Paint peeling on front diff. and axle?

Paint peeling on front diff. and axle?

My 2013 f-250 with 6500mi. has peeling paint on the front diff. and the axle
I'm more than disappointed. Anyone else have this happen?
I sprayed it with some fluid film for now.

check for any leaking fluids. particularly brake fluid. If it's flaking rather than peeling, it would most likely be from not being properly prepped prior to painting.

You did the right thing....you'll prob never have to touch it again.

My front and rear axles and covers had paint scrapes and some peeling as well as a few other spots. That's why I pulled the bed and tires off when it was brand new. Between POR 15, rubberized undercoating, anti corrosion compound, fluid film and 24 hours of free time I took a preemptive strike.
My last truck rotted away before my eyes. Even the differential cover and oil pan rotted through...how the heck does that happen! vertical surface cannot trap moisture, dirt etc. It's called cheap metal and poor corrosion control in a crappy winter salt infested northern territory.

I went overkill with the POR 15. Rustoleum will do a great job on your axles.

Flaking is probably a better description.

I don't know what fluid film is. But when i changed my gear oil I media blasted my diff cover and painted it with some black engine enamel. Engine enamel will hold up to the heat and any oils that get onto it. I have yet to see a paint or coating that holds up to brake fluid though.

bought my truck. First thing I did was undercoat it all and paint all the driveline components. Didn't seem to me that they did very much either.

I noticed mine doing the same thing. Have a couple chips on it that appear to be flaking off. I figured it must've been a rock or something that hit it and caused the paint to come off. As soon as we get some decent weather I will be repainting it.

Oh, mine is a 2012 with about 16,000miles. Not sure how long it has been flaking though

Seems to me like you have some unrealistic expectations.

There are some components, particularly those made of very thick metal, that don't come with great quality coatings. Consider your steering knuckle for example; it has rust on it before it even makes it to the dealer because they don't paint it. Has anyone ever heard of a failed knuckle because of rust? Yeah, me neither.

The same goes for your axle. If an axle has ever rusted out it's an exceedingly rare failure. The light coat of paint always comes off and you'll see some surface rust. I have a 22-year-old Town Car with an axle covered in surface rust...it's probably looked like that for the last 21 years. Who cares?

This is like getting frustrated that your factory oil turns dark.

IMO I don't think you have unrealistic expectations. You don't like visible rust colored parts under your truck and neither do I. "who cares?" Apparently you and I are two that do. While I agree the heavy parts like the axles, differentials, tracking bar are not at risk of rusting past the surface, I didn't like the look. So painting those parts is strictly cosmetic. No different than someone who likes colored shock boots, chrome diff covers, two tone paint, raised white letter tires etc. Ford decided not to do it, that's fine, that's why there are products to clean it up to your liking.

On my 2001 chassis I had deep delaminating rust on my shackles, frame rails, rotor splash shields, brake lines, spare tire well, oil pan and diff cover. So on my 2012 I cleaned them with isopropyl alcohol (IPA), mainly because I had an abundance of the stuff at 90% strength. Then I applied POR15 with a brush. I pulled the brake lines and fuel lines from the frame clips just enough to apply the POR15. Any area that was difficult to reach with a brush, I sprayed with professional grade rubberized undercoating. All bolts that might need to be removed for servicing that commonly rust solid were pulled and coated with permatex anti-seize (bed bolts, fuel tank, fuel neck bolts, EGT sensors NOX sensors ect). Larger component bolts in blind holes are never an issue to remove so they went untouched. Fluid film was for the sheet metal nooks and crannies inside the bed rails and over the arches, lower door skin seems etc. Anywhere a salty road brine can seep in, hopefully will be displaced and/or protected with the fluid film.

I'm happy with the result. After several salty road sloshings, A pressure wand has the truck chassis nice and shiny black. I love my Ford and took a proactive approach to help keep it solid where needed and cosmetically pleasing to MY eyes. Time will tell how it holds up.

That's pretty impressive, I think I may end up doing this this summer or at least the rear of the truck for now. I would do the same thing if I bought a new truck...I wish that I had gotten mine new so I could have done it earlier.

Also my axles were completely rusted after 2 years which was before it was a plow truck.

If you want to pay $150,000 for a $50,000 truck I'm sure they will paint axles however you like. Axles and such don't often fail from rust so there is no money spend protecting them from rust, not to mention whatever coating you put on them will be chipped away in a few years and rust anyway.

WOW I did not realize it cost $100,000 dollars to have the axles painted
Sometimes it doesn't cost more money to do something right the first time.
I get the point you're trying to make but it does not apply to the OP's question.

If the axles were painted with a little more quality and or paint thickness they would be fine. They would not chip and rust in a few years anyway. My new 2001 had scratches through the paint that rusted just like my 2012. I painted the axles and they remained rust free and black over the next 10 years.

BTW Axle differential covers fail due to rust all the time. Grant it, not the axle tubes but they are painted with the same poor quality paint job. If the axle was painted better maybe diff covers wouldn't be rusting away.

To each their own.
