98 Mountainer Off Road Build

Hello all, just thought I'd post my idea for my mercury and see what everybody had to say. I bought my mountaineer at an abandoned vehicle auction for 450. It has a 302/4R70W all wheel drive, the motor will be put into a ranger at some point due to PATS. My plan now is to pull the body off and part it out, then put a 300/Borg Warner 4 speed and a New Process divorced transfer case. I will also weld up my own roll cage and pipe "body". Anybody got any thoughts to make it easier or better?

I think your user name pretty much says it. Plum crazy. No offense intended. It just sounds like a lot of work and many details to figure out. I don't have the time for such things any more. I wish I did. At this point in my life, when I take something down for repair, I need to get it back on the road ASAP, which can make the job more stressful knowing that some little thing going wrong could put the vehicle out of commission for several days or more while waiting for a part.

I'm not sure why PATS is an issue, unless you're talking about moving all the electronics to your Ranger from the Mountaineer. In that case, I would think that PATS would be only one of many issues. Then you'll have to worry about wire harnesses, missing inputs and such. You could convert to a carb instead of fuel injection but there are still issues with that approach. Either way, seems like a big project.

I think there's a writeup on the Ranger Station for a V8 swap into a Ranger. You might want to check that out. The Ranger might not have PATS, but it never had a V8. Good luck.

"I think your user name pretty much says it. Plum crazy." Young and Dumb huh? I guess it might seem less crazy if I explain a little more, this mercury got hit HARD on the driver side. It's salvage title and doesn't have keys, so it won't run and needs new keys and re-tuned to those keys to fix PATS. I have a scrap truck with a carb 300/BW and an NP205 laying around at the farm so these parts are free. Also I'm 17 who likes to work on things but has no money so I enjoy the long route.

Plenty of crazy people are far from dumb. I admire your ambition and wish I had time for such projects.

Is the Ranger you're referring to the old F100 Ranger that was more or less full size?

Sorry for not replying, I didn't get an e-mail notification. No, the ranger is a 2000 ranger, with a blown 3.0 and no rust. I'm in the process of making the deal to buy it and begin the motor swap. Can't wait to get it done and see what a V8 is like in a little truck.

Good luck and keep us posted. I'm curious how this will be done. Not so much the physical aspects, but the electronics.
