timing chain quest?

my 78 351mod f150 has some issues. had vac. , timing, carb problems for a while. i put breaker bar on main crank bolt to turn motor with dist. cap off, noticed slight pause in movement of rotor as i turn it back and fourth. how much, if any is ok?

How much movement are we talking about in any gear system there will be some amount of back lash a few thousandths of movement shouldn't be a problem I don't have books for the 351mods but I would expect somewhere between .005-.009

timing chain ques.

thanx, looking at pointer, balancer probley moves 3/8-1/2 inch before rotor turns. had some help here before reading and cleaning marks, set timing by ear and timing gun but when i get it to run the best wich is clockwise-i think way advanced, then it wont start when hot. turns real slow, turn dist back couterclockwise and starts but runs bad, then as its running i turn dist so it runs ok. when i say balancer moves, i mean back and forth with breaker bar. sorry if i sound confussing. thanx again

You can set timing with a vacuum gauge in lieu of a timing light and eliminate guesswork.

Sounds to me that it may be time for a new chain and gear set. In all the older vehicles (pre computer) timing to peek vacuum then backing off 2* has given me the best performance results.

timing chain ?

thanx all, im going to tear it apart next warm day and replace set, i tried tuning with vac gauge also, got 18-19 on gauge but seemed like still alot of dist movement without changing vac much. on 78 351mod400 do i need to remove oil pan to get to chain and gears also? all motors i have done i dont remember pullng pan. thanx again

No you won't need to take the oil pan off. This is a straight forward remove and replace job. I would also suggest draining the block from the bottom after you've got all the other hoses and crap off before pulling the cover. There is either a plug or a hose barb for a block heater on the front right side of the block, depending on what options yours came with. This will keep the coolant from dribbling down into the oil pan from the coolant passages after the water pump and timing cover are removed.
