Can't fill DEF

My display tells me that my DEF is less than half full. I tried to add more and it won't take any. Any ideas?

don't fill it till it is more or less empty. Till you get the warnings.

How are you trying to fill it? Are you using the ford approved fill spout?

Are you using the Motorcraft fill tube? If the breathing tube is kinked it basically won't work.

I fill my DEF when the tank when it goes to less than half full with no issues.

I top mine off when ever it crosses my mind to do so. I have never seen a DEF Level message to date.

I have used the Ford DEF once and since then I have been using Blue DEF picked up at Walmart. I like the fill hose from Ford, but if you simply listen to the DEF as it is poured in you can tell when it is full without making a mess.

Mine started giving me eradicate DEF messages like less than 1/2 or 300 miles to go, etc. even when the tank was full. it would count down for awhile then clear on its own, usually on a rough road. No CEL the first few times, but after a couple, I had it diagnosed by a dealer and was told the Reductant Tank Temp Sensor was bad, estimated cost for dealer repair was $1200 (past warranty).

I recommend taking it out on a section of freeway made with concrete slab, that should bounce it loose, it you still have the stock shocks

I am using the spout that came with the Blue DEF. I have used it many times before with no issues. I have been towing for about 2000 miles since it was last topped off so I am sure it is down. It just overflows as if it were full, but I'm sure it can't be.

Not sure where you reside. Could it be frozen? Can you put it in a warm shop for a while and thaw it out real good? Eventually, running it for an extended period should thaw the tank. IDK Just thinking.

I have the Ford nozzle and I had an issue once where it wouldn't let any flow in. I removed it and reinserted it a couple times and wiggled it around and then it worked. Was dark and only my second time doing it so I'm not really sure what the problem was.

you need to rinse the spout with water after each use to keep it clean.

Those of you that keep topping off the DEF..... stop doing it. Drive the truck and fill the DEF when it tells you, at minimum when it drops below half tank. Do not fill it if the tank level is more than half. If you keep topping it off constantly, you will eventually run into problems (such as crystals in the fill tube, errors reading correct level, etc). We get calls on this DAILY from dealers, fleets, etc.

This seems to be a valid point. Over filling the DEF will tend to backfill into the hose and vent hose giving it a chance to crystalize. I learned my lesson.

X2... And after I rinse the spout I let hang vertical to allow any internal water to drain out. Once it is completely dry I put it back into the zip lock bag to maintain a clean spout for the next refill.
