hey guys im looking at upgrading my current ford.
needs are changin i need a Crew cab, (super Crew???) short bed 5.5 ft 2wd small v8 dont need 4x4 XLT package (maybe one higher) .
can you give me a few opinoins on fuel economy? this truck will never see a trailer. want to stay with a 17 inch wheel(16 would be better but that isnt going to happen)
If you are looking for a small 8, the smallest available is the 5.0L. That is what I have in my current truck and see 16-17 around town and 18-19 highway. Best I've done highway was cruise control set to 60 and got about 21mpg. Truck has 3.55 gears. You would do better with 2wd. I would even suggest looking into a 3.31 gear. Any reason for the need for a v8? the base v6 in 2wd will get even better fuel economy numbers, and around 300hp. Just throwing the idea out there.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 3.7 truck at all, my needs require a super crew (have a family) and since this doubles as my work truck, I must have a 6' box at the bare minimum.
That said if I was still a singe guy, and just needed a truck. I would go with the 3.7, SuperCab, 6' box and call it a day. Best fuel economy and reliability with that combo.
The 5.0L is fun, but overkill if you don't need 360 hp all the time. If fuel economy is the main concern, the 3.7, or an EcoBoost paired with 3.15 or 3.31's will net you the most. The EcoBoost will give you sports car levels of acceleration in reserve when you need it as an added bonus though.
Just the price tag. Should be able to get a solid deal on a 13. Give the 3.7 v6 a test drive and see what you think. Let us know how it goes. Good luck
i will, now remind me what is a mid range model???
There are 10 trim levels available on the 13s. Mid range model would be a lariat or Fx2/Fx4. I wouldn't rule out an XLT either. Check out the configurator at http://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/

I think the true mid-range are the nicer appointed STX & XLT models. As an example, my '13, FX4, EcoBoost, 157", came with every box checked. $52k MSRP, was parked next to a non Max-Tow Platinum $54k and King Ranch, at $53K and some change.
In my opinion, the FX4, Lariat, & KR are all within spitting distance of price, when similarly spec'd. Only the Platinum and Limited could be called truly " Range topping" models.
It really comes to specs and drivetrain packages, as one could spec a '14, XLT with HID, and leather and come close to $50k
i wont be buying anything that hight priced prob the XLT or maybe STX is the highest the cheap wad is willing to go
Couple things to consider on the STX model, for the 13s, it is only available as a supercab (half rear doors) vs. Super crew which was avail on the 14 models. You may be able to get a nicer equipped 13 XLT super crew cheaper than a 14 STX super crew. See what the dealer can offer
I have to agree with Tim, the 3.7L V6 would do great for your application. It has nearly 100 HP more than the ancient 4.2L V6 in your sig, and comes with a much better transmission.
The first-gen 5.4L V8 only made 235 HP, and in 3V format from 2004-2008 it was rated for 300 HP. So the base model V6 makes more power than the top level V8 of any F150 before 2009.
