a head question....

I just bought a rust free 93 with a previously frozen 302.I have a 97 explorer engine I plan to freshen up and stuff in place...has anyone tried the p heads with the stock manifolds?
I don't have another set of heads(I have trashed countless sets over the years) and own these. I will try them and see ,just curious if anyone has the experience.

To the top;

I was wondering the same thing. When and if the 5.0 dies in my 96, I want a 351W and I can get P heads and Explorer intakes dirt cheap around here. (yes, I know I would need a 351W Cobra or Lightning lower intake.)

Wondering if we're stuck with the homely Explorer headers or do we have to go to headers.

I read the old motorsport headers worked with minor mods. But they aren't available anymore..

you would most likely have to run stock P manifolds. finding headers to fit has been a plague for many folks for years. and mustang headers wont work due to how the header collectors route.

you might see if a mustang guy would trade for some regular GT40 heads.

you will also want to move all your current 5.0 upper/lower manifold over since the explorer intake points to the wrong side and could poss issues getting throttle cable connected correctly.

I will reuse the truck intake parts.

After looking I think a set of inexpensive summit truck replacement headers are going to be my start.it looks like they sweep outward hopefully enough that 90° boots and maybe small mods will get me there.
I'm not too worried to cut them up and build a set to work..if it comes to that.its been a while since the tig had any fun.

The stock explorer manifolds are not an option.I'm not thinking any mustanger would trade p's for regulars...not if they were in their right mind

yea 90* boots and a really short plug would perhaps work.

Accell header plugs I hope.I'm gonna tear the heads down tonight and hope they are in goodshape like the rest of the engine was.I'm going to order the summit headers this weekend I think.

I'm debating tackling heads on my truck now.. just don't know if I should with 212k. My engine runs great though, and has been very well maintained with mainly highway miles (70+%).

Someone just put up some GT40p heads and intake pretty cheap on Craigslist locally here.. but I already have nice bassani ceramic headers so I don't want to get them... too bad.

I've seen some AFR heads locally too but I have yet to see if they are pedestal or stud rockers and are a little above my price range. If they are pedestal and I can knock the price down some I'll grab them, but I have to see first. If I can't get those, I may go with gt40x heads new.. since there is a kit online with everything I need slightly over my budget but still acceptable. Hmmm I just don't know!

I have never seen afr that were not stud mount.
I am not wanting to do anything to negatively affect driveability.this is a dd and not an offroad buggy or anything else.I plan to drive it everywhere with family if needed so it just needs be dependable.
I can justify the p's as the engine was 30$ from a friend..headers because the cast irons were cracked anyway and would not work on the p's. My budjet is low for this...my psd still needs put back together and then many more other projects..

I highly recommend having the headers you buy ceramic coated, this will keep the temp down as well. very worth it and shouldnt be more then $150 i would think.

Once they are fitted I will send them to nitro plate for coating most deffinetly. I won't have it any other way.yea the coating is a must have...can't imagine headers with one anymore.

If I remember correctly its only 2 cylinders that need clearance also use a set of header plugs and 90 degree boot Taylor wires and heat insulators

It was cylinders 4 and 5 that needed some persuasion on my set up. And they didn't need a whole lot either
