Help! My 2009 E350 6.0 Van just had a brake problem arise. The truck has been acting weird lately throwing some codes having to do with exhaust pressure and flow, etc. But this afternoon I was driving fine pretty much all day around town. Stopped at home for a few minutes then went out again. The brake pedal is almost impossible to push down and there is a weird noise coming from underneath the truck. Sounds like something stuck in the fan but I can't see anything and the fan seems to turn fine by hand. The weather has been very cold here and the roads are wet with melted snow, salt, etc. Also I can't get the hood to open. Think it's froze shut.

Does your '09 have ABS?
Stands for "Anti Blocking System".
Means that when you brake and a tire wants to block and slip over the street, the ABS-System releases the brake as much as the blocking goes.
The side effect is that the brake pedal gets blocked and the ABS-valves are noisy ratteling -> as a warniung signal for the driver that the System is working
Kinda tough to really understand what you're describing Dick.
IF the brake pedal has significant resistance with engine running--similar to what you'd feel depressing it with engine off---sounds like an issue with the brake booster OR its vacuum supply. Since it is tied into the intake system and has a check valve there might be something amiss there.
You don't describe the driving experience with this condition so its behavior at idle while parked isn't useful---to me anyway. Cold weather, rain, snow & slush shouldn't have an effect IF all the wheel speed sensors are in good working order. Your model year should have a fairly sophisticated OBD-II system that'll report anything amiss.
BTW your DTC might be related to the potentially faulty vacuum situation of your brake booster.
Not much help I know but tough to diagnose something with so little info.
I am familiar with the feel and sounds of the anti lock break system but didn't notice any of those in this case. A couple of days ago the truck acted like it was starving for fuel for a few seconds then recovered and ran fine. It acted that way a few miles down the road, again only for a few seconds and has been fine since.
I have a Scan Gauge ll installed to monitor the difference between the EOT and Water Temps and have not seen any problems there. After the truck acting like it was starved for fuel I changed the settings to monitor boost. I have seen negative numbers at idle of between -4 and -7 psig. Not sure if that is normal as I have not monitored it before now.
I can't drive this baby without brakes so I guess it will be towed to the Ford dealer Monday unless I can figure it out and repair it at home.
Thanks for all your help. The problem was the vacuum pump had gone bad. The Ford dealer in Versailles, Ky. did a fine job and got me back on the road. Now I have another problem.. I have a DTC P0299 which is turbo trouble as near as I can see. There is a TSB on it and I believe I can do the repairs. Does anyone know if there is a thread on the turbo reconditioning and R/R for this van? Also if so, howe does one find it in these forums?
