Banks downpipe install

Would just like to say a few things about this pipe:

I started out removing my muffler a while back. I removed it and the pipe going over the rear axle, and welded the outlet onto the midpipe so it came out just in front of the rear wheels. This made it where I could finally hear the turbo a little.

The other day, after a quick search, I found where someone posted the part# for the Banks downpipe. I promptly ordered it. I previously had some other brand on my wishlist that I had found on autopartswharehouse.com. Now, I'm wishing I had ordered that one instead. The Banks part is quality, but after seeing some pictures on the web, I'm thinking it was actually meant to go along with their full exhaust system. The other downpipes out there are 2 pieces, and would be a drop-in replacement all the way to the connection at the midpipe. With the Banks, you will definitely need some extra fab work.

The other problem with the banks is that it's 2.75 inches diameter. 2.5 and 3 are much more common. If I was doing a full exhaust, I'd have ordered some 2.75, but since I only wanted to extend it a little, I went to O'reily. I ended up getting 2.5, and squishing the DP down to it. In hindsight, I wish I'd have gotten 3" and squished that to fit the 2.75. The other connections I welded. I made it go just past the crossmember and turn down and out a little.

Now the positive: It is louder,....actually I didn't want that. But I did want to hear more turbo scream, and it definitely has more turbo scream. Had a bit more when I only had the downpipe installed, but then it was blowing hot exhaust all over the frame. And there is definitely more power. In the past, other than in the rain, I've wondered if it's spinning the tires any. Well it definitely did this time. Was enough that I got wheel hop and it left some good marks.

So yeah, definitely do the down pipe. But maybe get one of the 2 piece ones instead of the Banks.

I really want to do this mod but like you said, I wasn't sure about the banks 2.75 and extra fab work. What turbo are you running?

If you have a part number, please post it Tom. I'll might need that tube for the old Banks I'm getting.
Thanks.

No guarantees of course, but this is the one I had saved:

MBRP DA6218 Exhaust Pipe | Auto Parts Warehouse

That bend at the v-band looks a little odd to me,...assuming they put up a pic of the actual part.

I would be willing to bet that MBRP down pipe is for a 1994.5 powerstroke and not a early 1994 IDIT. You have to be careful when searching for parts for a 1994 Ford diesel truck cause most of the parts you'll find will be for the PSD. You're better off searching for parts for a 1993 IDIT. If the pipe you posted the link for is in fact for a 1994 PSD, it can be made to fit the IDIT but it'll take some fab work. That's why most guys go with the Banks 52103 pipe, to my knowledge nobody else is still making a down pipe for our old trucks.

You're probably right,.... but they do have it marked as working for the K motor:

1994-1994: XLT; 8 Cyl 7.3L; "Turbocharged, VIN K"

They may not know what they're talking about though,...

They also mention the "F" motor? What's the code for the PSD? I assume if they say this works for both, then it probably doesn't work so hot on at least one of them.

This one actually appears to have the correct bends, but it doesn't tell the engine code it's made for:

IMO both of those products are for the Powerstroke. I say this because the inlet is 3" but the stock IDIT has a smaller flange on the housing. So it can't be a "direct fit replacement". Also the elbow right at the inlet end is typical of PSD DPs.

Still a viable way to make a 3" DP though with some fab!

Guess that confirms it then: Definitely do not buy the first link( MBRP). It looks wrong, and they show both engines,...which has to be wrong.

The Banks down pipe is really the best drop in option for us now. An OBS PSD down pipe can be made to fit but you have to do some cutting and welding. A lot of guys on here have done it and it doesn't look to be too bad of a job if you have access to a welder. I don't, that's why I've installed two of the Banks pipes.
