steering stabilzer

I have had my ex now for about 2 months. Since Ive had it I thought that it wanders on the hwy a bit so I looked at old threads on here and decided to replace the steering stabilizer. It looked like bilstein's are favorites on here so i found one on ebay

Bilstein 24 158848 Steering Damper | eBay

I wanted to find one at a regular online store cause sometimes ebay sellers are slow to ship things but i bought this one anyway cause of the price, and free shipping. I ordered it last saturday afternoon and I had it in my hand Tuesday at 9:00 am. So very impressed with the shipping time from the seller.

Install went great. Also replaced an axle bumper, also bought on ebay from sunrise ford in california. Their shipping time was also outstanding.

havent got to test drive on the hwy after the stabilzer install but i will report back if it helped my wandering ex problem

That's just a band aid, you need to fix the front end.

what should i keep my eye out for on the front end? I had it on blocks over the weekend to take the front rotors off and everything felt really solid and looked good. just drove it to and the new stablizer really helped.

The stabilizer helped to mask the problem. Really check the front end over. Something is loose, worn, or not aligned correctly. Do you have a lift in your truck? If so, how was the alignment after it was lifted? This is usually the #1 cause of front end issues in lifted trucks that I see.

That damper looks nice. Depending on where you live you may want to spray it with some clear coat to prevent oxidation. I love the look of Bilsteins but after a year in the Northeast salt and moisture they start to look bad.

How much clearance do you have between your springs and the bump stops - front and rear?

I've heard more people cure 'steering wander' with spring fixes than steering stabilizers. If the fronts are shot, that causes all kinds of fun stuff...if the rears are too soft, then you are actually wandering from the rear axle twisting as you apply and let off the gas/brake.

I swapped the fronts on my 2000 V10 with V codes and did a Modded B code rear swap...she steers like a train now - ZERO wander. Never touched my steering stabilizer, steering gear box, none of it - it was 100% fixed via the spring swap.

the stabilizer wasn't the problem. I once drove mine for a few days without a stabilizer at all after crunching it on a rock and driving home only making left turns (you should try it sometime).

Anyway, it wasn't really any different.

thanks for the reply, I have about an inch of clearance up front between bump stops and springs. forgot to check the back but im guessing its about the same.

Im guessing i could use some new springs. What kind of job is that to switch them out?

Depends on what you have access to (lift, etc.). I only had jacks and jack stands...took me and a buddy a day:

Shackles will get his clearance back, but won't improve the base problem with worn springs.
