Hi, I picked up a cheap Elm327 wifi reader for my daughter's car so I can use it to read/reset codes without having to drag out the computer and all it's cords.
I figured I'd have some fun with it in the truck as well. I have (and love) the ScanGaugeII already but would like to play with other options to see if I like them better.
I know DashBoss is the preferred IOS device solution, but they require their hardware and I'm not going to spend any more money on OBD hardware when I have three solutions already. I have a few free apps installed that work fine, but is there a "second best" app out there to DashBoss for monitoring temps, gauges, etc?
I wanna piggyback here a bit. I would like to know what a good hardware piece is for the OBDII as well. I don't have a scangauge and was going to get one but at $150+ if i can use my Ipad mini + a cheaper bluetooth hardware piece then why not?
I need to reset the codes on my wife's kia and at the same time figured i could use it as a dash board for the excursion.
I purchased a cheapy $30 (i think) bluetooth ODBII reader years ago off of ebay for my H1 and used torque on my android phone but kept on having gliches and issues which i figure probably came from the cheap bluetooth reader. I don't want to make that mistake twice and throw another $30 down the toilet.
I just got my OBDII elm327 WiFi for my Iphone. I also downloaded the Dash Command App along with the associated 02 Ford software app as well. For some reason Fords need an in app purchase for your year car/truck. $10 for the app and then another $10 for the 02 software, only Fords though, any other make it works fine on. I purchased it for the sole purppose of having an actual trans temp readout. works great so far, no complaints!
I use torque and dashcommand. well, I tried dashcommand but prefer torque.
I have 2 different cheap adapters. Both work well. One is a little slower than the other.
There are more expensive adapters and they work similar but a lot faster. Your update rates will be much higher. Best one I think runs over 100 bucks.
The cheapies either work or don't work. I think I paid around 15 bucks for each.

Any reason to go with the WIFI over teh bluetooth version?

Got a screen shot of the trans temp readout? I've been looking for one to use and none I've tried have tran temp yet.
If you have an iPhone then you have to use the Wifi Elm327 adapter - UNLESS you are jailbroken, in which case you can install roqybt4 which will allow your iPhone to talk to the bluetooth adapter.
The wifi version updates quicker on DashCommand and Torque. However any internet connected apps will time out since they'll try to use that connection for the internet. The bluetooth version obviously won't do that BUT you need to have the iPhone Jailbroken (unless you're on an Android device)
I do like that DashCommand works with Pioneer AppRadio so I can have all my info up on my head units screen. It's pretty awesome. I did buy the Extra ford stuff for $9.99 and it works fine.

Let me know if you want any info, pics, etc.
I have an ipad mini (no iphone) does that have the same issue with bluetooth and jailbraking?
Yes. For some reason apple will not let anything like this through on bluetooth. Running the WiFi is no big deal. And yes the mini will be the same. I also have a pioneer with Aap radio and it works great. Nice to have the bigger screen to see the readouts. A mini would be just that much better. I have an old ipod may just use for Dash Command. BTW..... Dash Command also has a performance screen for 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. It also has a readout for fuel mileage. Lots of fun little toys in this app!
