weird driving issues

ive been having an issue with my 96 f150 5.0 automatic trans. I will be driving down the road and at random times the trucks rear will feel like it pops and it can be violent. This happens at any time just cruising down the road not when I hit the gas just at a steady speed. I don't know if this is a problem with the rear or possibly an engine misfire? slop in the t case chain? if anyone has any input please let me know. thanks, Dave

I have heard a bad PIP sensor can cause engine misfire issues. Could this problem be a bad PIP sensor? just thinking of all possible problems

could be inside the differential itself, but for safetys sake you better get under there and do a visual check of the rear suspension ... spring mounts front and rear, u bolts, check for broken springs, and inspect the shock mounts.

No lights came on or flashed. I asked about the PIP sensor because about a month ago I was have similar problems but it seemed to be in the trans. I got a code P0320. I replaced the ignition misfire sensor and the light never came back on. But a lot of people told me code P0320 refers to a faulty PIP sensor which can cause engine miss or stall Im wondering if this could be it? because sometimes it feels like a loss of power when the rear pops like I described

Just a suggestion from a newbie. I would jack the rear end of the truck up and place it on some jack stands. Pull the rear wheels and check to make sure the axles themselves do not have any lateral play in them. I've seen, at least on my mustang, where the axle itself has started to come loose from inside the rear differential. Believe its a keeper that hold them in place? you can check this by grabbing the wheel prior to taking it off and pulling/pushing on them towards/away from the rear diff.

Option 2: Pull rear Diff cover after draining it and inspect the bearings and gears. Usually should not be a whole lot of slop/play in there.

Option 3: Could be bad wheel bearings.

How long do you normally drive it before you hear/feel this "pop/bang"?

Pull the diff cover off and inspect everything inside, if a small piece has broken off something it can get jammed between gears and cause further damage. When the cover comes off most of the gear oil will spill out so be ready for that with a catch pan, and clean out the rest of the fluid and any debris as best you can. Post up pics of what you find.

I jacked it up and both sides did have some lateral play like you described. I just don't know why the popping only happens at random times and not very often

About how long are you driving before these noises happen?
How much is a "little" lateral play?
