I need some guidance. I have a terrible cold start, hot start doesn't matter. IT IS JUST HARD TO START!!
Here is what I have checked so far. The glow plugs all ohm within range. Using my test light the GPR between the 2 smaller poles lights up with key on, between truck ground and 1 of the larger poles it lights up, nothing on the other large pole (so the PCM is not kicking the relay on), OK, so I put a momentary switch between the constant hot large pole and the smaller pole that has the red wire attached to it. push the button and then I hear the relay engage and I have power now on the other large pole. But the truck is still hard to start (if it sits for more than a day or drops below 35 it will not start . Is there a way to check the wiring between the GPR and the valve cover gasket connection? To make sure there is power getting to the glow plugs.
Now on another note, I can use my buddy's jump box and it will turn over with no problem, I can take the batteries out and about guarantee there will be a dead cell. Where do I start looking for issues?
Jump the big terminals on the GPR relay with a screwdriver for 30 seconds. That will heat up the glow plugs, and if it starts easy the problem is in that system.
But if you do no have enough volts when cranking it will not start. Stick a cheap voltmeter in the cigar lighter and read it while cranking. Less than 10 and it may not start. Could be the batteries, could be the alternator.
When you say "turn over", you mean it spins fast but does not start? How old are the batteries?
The batteries are about 6-8 months old, and the alternator is about 4 months old. jumping the two large poles, wouldn't this be the same as the momentary switch between the small pole and constant 12v?
Not necessarily. If the contactor plates in the relay are pitted badly, they may not carry enough current to adequately heat the glow plugs. By completing the circuit across the two large posts, you take the relay out of the equation completely.
