Whats the difference between a straight grind camshaft vs a different grind camshaft on the intake and exhaust
A single pattern cam has the same valve lift and amount of time the valve stays open (duration) with the intake and exhaust valves. A dual pattern cam has different amounts of lift and duration for the intake and exhaust. Crane cams are famous for dual patterns.
How are they used? Well, if you look at the 300 head, the exhaust valve is smaller than the intake. So, one might want the exhaust valve to lift further and/or stay open longer than the intake to make sure all the burnt air/fuel mix is discharged before the new mix enters.
My cam is crower as you know and its a dual pattern cam I love the power is there but I wish it would lope at idle there just something about a cam lope that gives me the goosebumps. Like you I want swap cams I've been doing my studying again I want to try out crane or comp but then again stay with crower maybe get my head worked on again.
With any cam grinder....tell them exactly what you want and they (if possible & practical for your application) will make it. Crower as an example, I would call them, inquire as to what you want and then you can even send in your cams for reground 9if its possible) saving you even more $.
