Having intermittent speed control and horn operation----a recent development but I'm certain its the clockspring; '03 E250 with tilt wheel, 185K miles
My testing so far has been nothing more than observing when speed control won't engage horn won't sound either. Several times the speed control has engaged but horn still not sounding.
The clock spring is generally just a connection between the column and sterring wheel. You can remove clock spring from column and just do a continuity test but thats about all.Look for cracks inthe harness.iIf at any time someone changed your sterring knuckle and let the sterring spin freely,it will damage the clock spring.By checking airbag system for codes itwill norrow things down.IMPORTANT,never work on airbag system with battery connected!
Thanks for the heads up about the airbag----I was aware working on, around or even near them can be fraught with danger!
(Actually been at this DIY vehicle repair thing a while along with having once owned a body shop, now installing glass & windshields mostly in big trucks.)
Great advice about the steering components though---I've had the steering box and most of the other front end things changed out recently too---more than 2 months ago though. This particular issue seems to have developed in the last few days.
Yup sure sounds like thats the problem.Lots of techs should know to lock the sterrring wheel, but dont. This is the end result and it may not cause the problem write away but not long after.
