Driver is responsible for keeping his/her car under control. Why not blame Mother Nature? She caused the rain. Son took car w/o permission. Very surprised that not one individual suggested a butt whipping. I never did that crap when I was younger (A.K.A. taking car w/o permission).

Sorry for your loss, but it sounds like the father was more than reasonable with his son. In fact, his son got off easy because original punishment was $3,000 but was reduced to paying diagnostic fees, higher deductible, etc., which was much less.
