A hidden danger on 3.0
A Freeze plug blew a hole through it where it had rusted on the back side of it.
SO..........Everyone check your freeze plugs. Take a sharpened nail or any pointed tool and check for weak spots on them.
Got a call from my wife today while she was on her way home from work. She was less than a mile from home when she said 2 engine lamps came on it started to run bad wouldn't go over 35-45 then the oil light came on. She made it to the off ramp and then it died and started smoking.
I went an pushed her home and it was HOT!!!!
I'm just hoping that she didn't ruin the engine. I was going to wait until next year to maybe pull it and rebuild it.
But now.......I don't know
thanks for the info. i have a 4.0 litre. i just got done cleaning it, i was wondreing about those plugs. i hope mine are ok. now that you mentioned it we all should check them from time to time. let us know how thinngs work out with your 3.0 litre... fords forever rick
Been there already my friend. Replaced all of them buggers about 2 years ago. 2 in both the front and rear, and I believe 2 on each side.
It aint easy, but it is do-able. Mine also rotted from the inside out. Found it as a small pin hole on front drivers side. When I went to replace, The whole thing just crumbled away. I guess we got lucky by finding it when we did.
This is a 3.0 also....
Good Luck,
reever
Well went out this morning, put in more water and started it up.
Looks like bad news. Real ruff running and My Son said it was blowing water out of the tail. More than the normal you can get when you start it in the mornings.
Looks like I'll be looking for a engine to rebuild, But will check it out more before I go that route.
Oh, I forgot to tell you all that the freeze plugs that came in the engine were metal but you can get replacements in Brass that won't rust.
if it's not one car, its the other one................
Looks like it blew a Head gasket also.......
So I'll do a Compression test to see if the rings are still Ok
then pull the heads and go from there.
Might try to rebuild engine in Van.
Ah yes! I had an '89 that had nice new shiny freeze plugs on the sided of the block, but when I went to change the transmission I found the really cruddy ones on the back of the engine. I actually stuck a pencil through one of them! I was lucky.
