Well, I broke down again. This time with a load of boats on my way to the local state park with some chicks! Man that pissed me off. I thought I ran out of gas until I opened the hood and gas was running all down around the carb. I'm figuring that the float is stuck or the needle valve is clogged. Tell me if I'm wrong.
So I have a few questions:
1. Do I have to rebuild the carb, or can I do a "quick job" by taking the top off and cleaning it all out?
2. If I choose to rebuild the carb, what carb do I have (300 six) and what is the best kit to buy?
3. If I choose to go crazy and buy a new carb, what is the best brand/size?
1) Yes, you can remove the top and inspect the bowl, needle and seat, and float height. It could be something as simple as the needle binding up, or the float got knocked out of adjustment.
2) What year is the motor? I'm not sure if they used more than one brand, but mine is a Carter 1bbl. I don't know if kit brand really matters, but, if you are going to take the time to rebuild it make sure you get a complete kit and replace everthing. A complete kit should include things like the throttle shaft, packing, bushings, choke shaft, needle and seat, etc.....
3) I replaced mine about 7 years ago. I had an account with the local Ford dealer so I got parts at a resonable price. I bought a new replacement one from Ford and it bolted right on, no adjustments needed. It's still running great.
One Question I have though, with it acting like it ran out of gas and fuel running down (the outside?) of the carb, did you check the condition of your fuel filter and fuel line? It could be a broken fuel line or fuel filter. That is the first place I would check if the gas was on the outside of the carb. Usually a bad needle/seat, float, or other problems inside the carb dumps the fuel into the intake, not outside the carb.
Your 300, assuming it is stock, has a 1BBL carter carb on it. I would recommend a full rebuild, as the kit is only around $15, while a replacement carb is in the $200 range. As for brands, whatever the local Napa or Advance Auto sells is fine. I think they are GP Sorensen kits, but most of these kits come from the same manufacturer.
