Okay, i just picked up my newest toy, a 1973 F250 Ranger XLT Camper Special......its got the underbed, locking tool box.....which is locked, and i dont have the key. is there a trick to opening one without doing damage? My 76 has the same toolbox, i will likely mess with that one to see if a thin piece of metal or similar can be used to open it without breaking anything. Were these typically keyed with a unique key, or were they keyed alike to either ignition or door cylinders?
It's a unique key. It looks a lot like a gas cap key. Just take the truck to a locksmith. They should be able to make you a key in about 20 min. My key cost $20.00.
Look on the cover. There may be a number stamped on it. From that, a locksmith can make a key that will usually work 100% of the time. You may need to brush it a bit. Use brass, not steel.
I will compare the mechanism on the one that i can open, to see what can be done without resorting to destructive means.........the 76 doesnt have a key either, so i may just look at getting replacement lock and key for both trucks
If I remember right its an up right lock tab like a glove box? But with it key locked, the lock tab might not push down because the handle will not open to let it.
I am trying to remember if you can go in above the box and get to it, but the Ford engineers might have thought about that too?

Nope. It's a spring loaded ramp that locks in place when locked. When locked the handle won't move either.
I learned how to pick a lock on some website and unlocked the one on my parts truck in a few minutes of trying. I couldn't drive the truck to a locksmith and didn't want to find out the cost to come to me and I didn't want to destroy the lock. All it took was a paperclip rake and a 90 degree pick to turn the cylinder. PM me and I can walk you through it.
I am not trying to encourage theft but everyone should realize that this can be done pretty easily by anyone with the know how and tools. On the good side it could save your life or someone else's someday knowing how to do it.
