I think I may have a cracked r.h. manifold on my 1990 5.8, anyone had this problem? Also I been checking out used 5.0 factory mustang headers on E-bay as a possible replacement or Summit truck headers, any problems with the 5.0's fitting a 5.8 truck?
Was this a flaw in fords design of the 5.8 manifold to cause this? I know whatever I do I need to keep it legit because soon Illinois will start checking emmisions on ALL trucks & cars.
I just went with Bassani headers and a high flow bassani y-pipe!! This was after an exhuast leak at manifolds and y-pipe. Passed beautilfully on emissions and sounds great as hell. Very easy installation and much more low end power. On the pricey side but well worth it!!!
I have a set of cast manifolds off a 96 5.8 for sale. I dont know if they bolt up to the earlier years or not. I also went with the complete bassani setup. Im a big fan.
Bassani stuff is nice but gets costly. You can easily get a used set of BBK 351W swap shorties and have a custom y-pipe fab'd up for $200 or less with mandrel bends. $70 for a new Carsound (magnaflow made) cat too.
Just shorties gain very little power, I changed from shorties to Hooker LT's and there is a far larger bottom end gain over the shorties I had. My y-pipe isn't the nicest but gets the job done. I can't imagine what the difference would have been going from brick..er..manifolds to Long Tubes instead of shorties.
I also went to a Magnaflow muffler from a Flowmaster and am VERY pleased with the sound difference. No more "tinny" sound or drone from the Flow.
BTW, I passed the sniffer with flying colors with that exhaust system on my truck.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, I whacked off the junk midas so called glasspack/combo-y-pipe outlet muffler (dont waste your money on it ever) bought myself a 3 foot length of 2 1/2 inch pipe , swelled one end to 3 inch & made a 60 degree bend in it and ran that sucker out the right side infront of R.R. tire.
No more fumes, plus its not loud with 2 converters still on ....hey its a cheap fix I know but after starting it up this morning and finding out I've lost a cylinder someplace. I'm hoping its the oil comming out of valve cover again that caused problem , I keep putting off changing them because of all the bs you have to go through to change them.
