I'm posting this in the offroad section too, but there is more traffic over here and I need an answer quick.
I'm going to look at a used electric winch today, but I'm not sure if it will fit on my bumper.
My question is: Can an electric winch be mounted in either direction? For instance if it is mounted with the motor on the left when looking at the truck, could you flip it around where the motor was on the right? Would you need to reverse the leads or something?
Most full size winches use a 4.5"x 10" mounting bolt pattern, either "foot down" or "foot forward". Most are also designed to "under wind" in other words the cable goes on from the bottom. Most Ramsey and Warn planetary gear models will fit on each others bumpers, what brand and model winch are you looking at? the older style, but still available worm gear Ramsey RE series winches use a totally different mount, rather than 4 bolts on a 4.5"x 10" pattern, they utilize either 2 or 4 bolts on both the front and back of the winch.........What mounting pattern does your bumper have
I my bumper has 6 bolt holes I believe. I'm not so much worried about how to mount it. I can add holes if I need to. The fitment problem I have is that the bumper has a sort of a well that the winch sits down in. There is more room on the right side of the cable opening than on the left, but the winch I am looking at has the motor on the left. Could I just flip it around and mount it with the motor on the right (basically, facing backwards from it's current installation)? It would still wind from the bottom, but now clockwise rotation spools the cable out instead of in.
My Warn and Ramsey 12V Planetary winches, a Warn M8000 and a Ramsey QM5000, both have the motor on the left, and they underwind........If you turned them around, you would need to run all the cable off the spool, and rewind it with the remote control switch in its "power Out" rather than its "Power in" position, so as to operate it underwind.........I wouldnt try it personally. Again, what winch are you looking at, and what type of bumper do you have?
its a Warn M10000, id be really hesitant buying it without a controller, since you cant test it properly......., thats such a cheap price, id suspect that its got problems, and the owner has figured he'd just say he's "Lost the Controller" so you cant test it..........i can hear the comment know on your call to him when it doesnt work "Well it worked great last time i used it"........ask him how he used it without a controller, or how long since he used it......did he use the controller? Maybe you have a buddy nearby with a Warn that has a compatible controller.....BTW, the M10000 has been out of production for at least 10 years, maybe longer.......
This is my bumper:

on your bumper, are the mounting holes on the front face surrounding the fairlead opening, or are they on the bottom of the bumper? With 6 bolt holes, im going to guess that the bumper may have been built for an older Warn upright winch, either an 8274, or its older predecessor, both of which were spur gear winches, with the motor directly over the winch drum. I just went out and looked at the Warn Bumper on my 77, its drilled with mounting holes for both Foot down and Foot forward style mounts, and mine would be able to fit most planetary gear models, as well as the uprights. its got the typical 4 bolt 4.5"x10" mount, which is how the Warn M10000 mounts
Yes, M10 and 12 same size.......and it should fit in the proper configuration, after seeing your bumper. If it can be tested, and it works, it worth more than $200, you can still buy a controller for it.
Do a search on the forums here, look for Koenig Winch, or go on the 61-66 Forum, and look for a thread regarding a 65 with winch, Koenig parts and info are still available, a guy named Lars from somewhere over in Europe now owns the Koenig name and parts business
I actually would love to get the PTO winch working. The previous owner disconnected everything except the actual winch when they had new exhaust installed. Instead of unbolting everything, they cut the mounting plates out with a torch and sawed the shafts in half.
I have all the pieces to get it hooked back up, but it is going to be a real pain because I have to relocate the muffler and exhaust (which is welded in), fabricate new mounting brackets, and replace or splice the shafts. I also want to do headers, so I figured if I have the exhaust out, that would be a good time.
I figured that I would grab this electric for cheap and throw it in while I get all that sorted out because it could be a while.
