Hi I have a 2001 7.3 with 265k on it.
I am new to the diesel world.
I am just curious if anyone out there has any suggestions on getting better MPG. I live in MN in the winter I am getting 11-12 in the summer 14-16. I am wanting to do whatever I can to get as much MPGS as possible.
Tuners, Intakes, Exhaust, whatever it takes.
If you have any suggestions I would really appreciate it!
Thank you!
Welcome to FTE. The first place to start would be in the "read first" section just above your post. Click on the second one (of the three listed) and you will find all kinds of info about this. Give it a few minutes and Tugly should be along (resident fuel miser) and he will give you more info on how to squeeze whatever MPG is left to give. The mileage you have listed is about normal and the more mods you do, the more "foot" you use to enjoy the mods and the then the fuel MPG goes out the window anyway.
The only way to really improve your mileage is to make sure everything is up to 100% tuning wont get you mpg.... Changing your driving habits will keep it under 2000 rpm
winter blend fuel will decrease your mileage. i live in so cal and i also Get worse mileage with the winter blend fuel..
You could also check to see if your up pipes are leaking. look on the fire wall just behind the turbo where the doughnut type gasket is on the up pipe connection. look for black soot on the firewall directly across from the gasket. if you see a black streak at the same level, you have a leak and it will also hurt your mileage
If you ARE willing to do what it takes, Go with stock size tires. If the truck is running to specs, stock tires will probably get you more mpg than all those mods. Just sayin.
That's the major thing that affects me I'm sure... My lift, tires, and gears. I don't drive to work every day (retired) so I'm willing to pay at the pump for my off road capability. I don't get to go that often, but man, it's fun...

Look at my signature... It's a bad combination for mpgs... I average 14 and I beat the crap outta it (within reason).
