OK, I have read HK's cold start thread nearly entirely, read a couple of threads on starter drive not engaging and have some questions. My 2002 4wd 7.3l excursion has 2 new batteries as when it got to 0 f it did not have enough reserve to start even jumped from another diesel... and now the frigging starter spins like a packard merlin but never engages the engine.
From what I understand there is a desirable type of replacement starter... which leads me to ask how I tell if I am gettin the good style?
last couple days have been -15f, the ex is outside at my machine shop plugged in but won't start as the friggin drive is not engaging.
anybody have pics of the various types with labels as to which style I want?
1. Stay away from Asian Denso-"style" high torque starters... they do NOT hold up.
2. Most recommendations are to take your OEM starter to a reliable rebuilder and have it rebuilt (as opposed to purchasing "lifetime warranty" parts from one of the box stores like AZ, Oreilly's, AA, etc.)
3. You can get a high torque starter, but pay attention to #1 above... I've had good luck purchasing from Nations (Item # M8T50072 High Torque Diesel Starter for Ford Trucks 7.3L Diesel) from this link, about half way down the page.... Diesel Starters & Alternators 100% New Great Price
