I have 89 150 XLT Lariat, 302. It has only 70k miles. When I slow down to 30mph, the transmission will not shift down from od, unless you accelerate heavy. It seem to up shift ok. Everything seem to work fine, if I manually downshift. Is there any adjustment that might help?
70k on truck and trans? Did this just start happening or was there an "event" beforehand? AOD trans right? Have you removed anything related to trans/engine lately? I'm no trans expert but could be stuck valve. When was fluid/filter changed last? Check the fluid level and smell the dipstick. Get back with more info and I'll try to help or at least stir up something.
Yes, it only has 70k, my dad bought it new, and I've owned it for 5 years. It started doing this about 6mts ago. The trans was flushed, and fluid and fliter was replaced at 60k. The only other thing that has been done recently, is tune up, wires, plugs, cap, and egr valve. The fluid level is full, and it also looks and smells good.
I sent reply but it got lost. My ISP timed out or something. Hanyes lists bellcrank linkage pivot and Throttle control Valve linkage. The TV can be adjusted at the engine. If you can shift up and park, reverse work fine I don't think it would be in the linkage. TV linkage needs to be adjusted when the trans downshifts too much or at wrong speed. There could be other times but I don't know. I've installed shift kits in AODE which is similar (I think). I believe you have a valve sticking in the valve body and holding the trans in OD. I cannot tell which valve controls OD. Removing the valve body to clean/inspect it isn't difficult. IN my case I removed it to add bigger springs and improve flow which is what a shift kit does. It may also have you drill a new hole somewhere to bypass something or reduce/improve flow. You just drop the pan and pull the bolts holding the valve body. Most bolts are small but if some are bigger you have to remember which ones go where. There are springs located above the valve body that makes the valve "return" and they have to be put back in the original position. As in any hydraulic system there are holes and the valve directs flow or prevents it. The valve is similar to a piston. It has to seal good to keep pressure up. In your case I'd think either the valve is sticking or a spring malfunctioning/missing. I'm no trans expert and have no experience servicing AOD though. Nor do I trust most trans shops because they might need the work and my money. If you can trust one ask them or get an estimate. I don't have enough literature on AOD to tell you which is OD-3 valve. If it has the same valve body as AOD-E I might can find it. If you seriously believe your clutches and seals are all good, you might attempt cleaning valve body and inspecting the springs. Everything has to go back together right and tight. If you are capable of that, it isn't that difficult. Or you could install a shift kit while you're in there and have more thorough instructions. I paid ~$130 in '97 but they are below $80 now and I've seen some ~$50 for trans that are no longer used on new trucks. Sorry, I can't do more. I'll check back though to see if anyone else has anything or if you have more questions.
